in Plastic Injection Molding Apollo Group Inc 2006 Riordan acknowledges opportunities that eXist for improving current business process design Service request SR rm OOl calls for the implementation of an information technology plan designed to increase inventory and manufacturing process efficiency at Riordan Manufacturing Learning Team B consulting has committed to delivering the proposals outlined in this document to Hugh McCauley Riordan IT and Riordan information systems consultants on Monday September 6 2010 Further this proposal will be applicable for the following Riordan operating units 0 Albany Georgia Plastic beverage containers 0 Pontiac Michigan Custom plastic parts development 0 Hangzhou China Plastic fan parts production BUSINESS PROCESS EVALUATION FOR RIORDAN MANUFACTURING Although Hangzhou China is out of scope for the current proposal an RFID and Bar Coding infrastructure design for the China plant accompanies the document The 5 year business plan in Hangzhou China will benefit by this design proposal Riordan business models ensure adequate product quality manufacturing efficiency given current infrastructure designs and prompt customer delivery Riordan Manufacturing places a priority on customer satisfaction and operating within its budgetary constraints The integrity eXhibited by Riordan along with effective management of capital inventory control and manufacturing processes has enabled Riordan to maintain new product development Although the foundation at Riordan is generally efficient and effective the company has engaged in this proposal to improve market share and long term profitability through enhancements in computer system design inventory processes and manufacturing improvements Riordan projects that these initiatives will lead to crucial improvements in its marketing strategies resulting in sustained leadership in the Plastic Injection Molding industry The rate of change and eXpansion encountered at Riordan has not been without impact Many of the current business processes require manual intervention and lack cohesive integration with inventory and manufacturing systems These inefficiencies have led to inconsistencies in corporate infrastructure and design Adhering to a commitment in the SiX Sigma strategy Riordan must improve operational infrastructure by seeking better product quality and minimizing variability in manufacturing business processes iSiXSigma 2010 Therefore the BUSINESS PROCESS EVALUATION FOR RIORDAN MANUFACTURING objective of this proposal is to provide an effective evaluation of primary business processes and infrastructure design Learning Team B Consulting has identified the following critical business processes affecting overall Inventory and Manufacturing efficiency and design Raw Materials Receiving Manufacturing with Inventory and Final Product Shipping The proposal will recommend the implementation of RFID Integrated Radio Frequency Identification and Bar Coding technology to enhance Inventory and Manufacturing systems at Riordan Table 1 Process Design Opportunities for Improvement provides a high level overview of the opportunities for improving business process design and efficiency enhancements Business Process Desigr Efficiency Improvement Opportunities Raw Materials Receiving 0 Shipping documents processed manually 0 Reconciliation of shipping documents and order receiving reports is manual 0 Inventory and materials reports are only available on a weekly basis 0 Raw materials to and from the factory are processed manually 0 Daily reporting between the receiving area supervisor and the receiving clerk uses a manual process 0 Inventory clerk manually enters raw material receipts into inventory system Manufacturing with 0 Raw material usage form and accounting data is prepared manually Inventory and provided to the inventory clerk 0 Inventory clerk manually enters materials usage data in the inventory system 0 Subassemblies and completed products reports are manually BUSINESS PROCESS EVALUATION FOR RIORDAN MANUFACTURING Business Process Desigl Efficiency Improvement Opportunities reconciled in a report to the inventory clerk daily Final Product Shipping Sales orders entered into customer and billing system manually Order shipping team manually picks finished products from inventory for shipping and sales Products are loaded onto trucks manually Customer shipping and billing system update is manual for truck number and datetime of shipment Inventory system updates manually entered from daily shipped order report by the inventory clerk Physical inventory only occurs once a year in December to reconcile raw materials subassemblies and finished products with inventory system Sales orders only received via faX or phone Table 1 Process Design Opportunities for Improvement Overview of Current Business Process Design As outlined in Table l a significant number of manual business processes are in use at Riordan Manufacturing and require remediation to improve process efficiency Each primary business process reviewed in this proposal follows Raw Materials Receiving BUSINESS PROCESS EVALUATION FOR RIORDAN MANUFACTURING Riordan operating procedures begin with the Raw Materials Receiving process In the current process design trucks carrying raw materials arrive at a Riordan manufacturing plant Truck drivers deliver shipping documents to the Riordan shipping supervisor The shipping supervisor manually validates and verifies the shipping document with another report called the Scheduled orders receiving report The scheduled orders report produced weekly and organized by day requires manual handling Apollo Group 2006 Following validation of the shipping documents with the schedule of eXpected orders the receiving clerk updates the Riordan inventory system with receipts for raw materials and product quantity The receiving containing customer billing and shipping information The billing and shipping reports require manual processing by Riordan shipping personnel Most orders use inventory on hand Custom orders require special handling and use inventory on hand along with unique materials produced by Riordan Manufacturing Labels containing current time date billing and customer shipping information accompany each product as they are loaded onto delivery trucks for shipping Inventory clerks manually update inventory and shipping information in the inventory control database As depicted in the proceeding business process design flowcharts Graphic 3 provides an overview of improvements in Final Product Shipping processes using RFID infrastructure to enhance process efficiency and improve customer RFID RFID is a term used to describe a system that transmits the identity in the form of a unique serial number of an object wirelessly using radio waves Unlike UPC barcoded items line of sight is not required for tracking The following provides a brief outline of RFID technology 0 The antenna emits radio signals to activate the RFID tag Data read and write exchange occurs to the RFID receiver 0 The reader emits radio waves ranging from one inch to 100 feet or more depending on its power output and the radio frequency used When an RFID tag passes through the electromagnetic zone it detects the reader39s activation signal 0 The reader decodes encoded data on the tags integrated circuit silicon chip and transmits the data to the host computer for processing Current uses for our implementation of RFID include but are not limited by the following Asset Tracking Manufacturing Supply Chain Management Retailing Payment Systems Security and Access Control Implementation will require a real time locating system for which a secure VPN Network infrastructure will be required The RFID system will significantly improve customer BUSINESS PROCESS EVALUATION FOR RIORDAN MANUFACTURING l3 relationships as it relates to point of sales accounting issues and shipping of materials To reduce space within information infrastructure facilities we plan to propose a hardware and software virtualization implementation Virtualization deployment will reduce server space requirements within each facility without sacrificing day to day business and production functionality Our recommendation for virtualized infrastructure will include an initial installation of IBM Blade Center servers and VMWare operating system software for application deployment Review Graphic 1 for an and control plants The ITV infrastructure improves Riordan s global manufacturing and inventory objectives Using CMS Consignment Management Solution Ferguson 2006 Riordan can track and update inventory control systems nearly real time between all manufacturing plants including Hangzhou China Further the proposal recommends the use of VeriSign s RFID EPC global correlation technology design to enable secure product tracking throughout Riordan s supply chain system Strategic EPCglobal network hubs can provide real time reconciliation of product and materials shipments while validating and
