CJS 240 Week 6 Corrections and Treatment The United States Juvenile Corrections department works with at risk juveniles in various ways through various programs. Some of these programs are labeled as community based treatment programs, incarceration or institutionalization programs and after care programs. All programs are aimed at deterring juveniles from criminal behavior and with hopes of rehabilitation. Community based programs involve different types of programs including probation, restitution, counseling, vocational training and residential treatment programs such as foster care. Community based programs are for those juveniles who are not a threat to the community and have a greater chance of successfully completing a rehabilitation program. Two concepts that I would like to discuss right now are probation and counseling. Probation is a program that is ordered by the courts to a juvenile that is not considered to be a violent offender or a threat to the community. Probation can be suited for each offender for a certain period of time, as determined by the court. While on probation the court has the opportunity to impose certain restrictions to control the behavior of the juvenile such as drug testing, curfew and going to school. While on probation a juvenile can be ordered to other types of programs, such as my next area of discussion, counseling. A juvenile is placed on probation for a certain period of time as deemed necessary by the courts with a set of goals included in the terms. Sometimes is a juvenile successfully completes the terms of his or her probation such as paying back restitution, completing community service hours and any extra requirements ordered by the court, the juvenile can then be considered for early termination of the probation. It should be noted that if a juvenile fails to comply with the terms and conditions of probation that the courts can impose a stricter sentence that may include a more intense probation or incarceration. Another community based treatment program is counseling. Some juveniles are ordered to attend counseling for several reasons that can include anger management and drug abuse. If the negligent behavior that was acted upon involved the use of drugs or being under the influence of drugs then counseling may be the other alternative to help the juvenile understand the effects. Often when a person, whether juvenile or adult uses drugs there is an underlying reason and sometimes it can be depression and a hard time coping with life’s issues. If a juvenile seems to be even a slight threat to the community or themselves or their criminal behavior is severe then they can be sentenced to Institutionalization. Being incarcerated includes the fact that the juvenile is not in their environment and removed from other risky behaviors in society. Not everyone agrees that incarceration is the best option for a juvenile. Some believe that incarcerating a juvenile at a young age can increase the chances of a juvenile learning more bad habits from other experienced juveniles and therefore the juvenile will have a higher chance at recidivism. Another factor that those who do not agree with incarcerating a juvenile includes that they feel it does not rehabilitate the juvenile in hopes of getting at the cause for what is making them act the way they do. Rehabilitation can come in several ways through different types of programs such as Intensive Aftercare Programs. Re-entry into the community once a juvenile offender has served time in incarceration can be emotionally and physically serious when it comes to adjustment. Through an Intensive Aftercare program the youth will learn greater responsibilities of becoming an adult in society and acting responsibly. A juvenile will also be monitored as to their ability to reintegrate with society successfully. One aspect of the Aftercare program involves family involvement and life skills. Family involvement can be included in the form of group and individual counseling. Having open communication among all family members that the juvenile interacts with daily is important to a juvenile’s rehabilitation, in the form of a support group and to develop a nurturing relations between parents and siblings. Another area that aftercare focuses on is helping the juvenile prepare for the adult world by seeking employment and going through life skills training. An overall emphasis should be put on rehabilitation to prevent the chances of recividism and possibly increase deterrence to those who may potentially think about trying criminal behavior. . Members who join a gang for this reason are typically involved in drug use and truancy but rarely violent acts of delinquency. Individuals who join gangs for this reason may have an older family member who is a gang member. They may go through distinct hazing rituals before they can join. The hazing rituals offer assurance that the individual is capable and ready to start his or her new life as a gang member. WEEK 7 DQ 1 Peer group relationships are closely tied to delinquent behavior, delinquent acts tend to be committed in groups. Adolescents who maintain relationships with delinquent friends are more likely to be influenced to engage in antisocial behavior committing delinquent acts. Kid's develop relationships with one another and if that relationship is with delinquent peers the closer the relationship the more likely the child is to become delinquent, regardless of their own personality or upbringing. Antisocial youths join up with kids who think like they do and they help each other maintain their delinquent behavior. Troubled kids choose delinquent peers of out of necessity rather than desire. The social baggage they carry around prevent them from developing associations with conventional peer groups. They are impulsive and this causes them to get together with friends who are dangerous and will get them into trouble. Deviant peers do molt cause straight kids to go bad but they amplify the likelihood of a trouble kid getting further involved in antisocial behaviors. DQ 2 Chronic truancy has long been identified as a key predictor for negative outcomes in education. If juveniles are not in school they can not learn or educate themselves and develop relationships with other competent peers, received social competence, and guidance. If the juvenile fails in school there is significant information that they will turn to antisocial behavior, criminal activity, gangs, burglary auto theft, and vandalism. There are man variable why delinquents fail at school. Family factors, lack of parental guidance is a huge issue as parents have the ability to set a good example and to have the most immediate affect on children , and that includes the parents attitudes toward education. School climate issues, such as size of the school and attitudes of teachers,counselors , administrators and other students affect a childs performance. Schools are often inconsistent in the procedures that are in place for dealing with chronic absenteeism and may not have meaningful consequences available for truant youth Understanding a childs need to belong to a gang is important as gangs serve as a bride between adolescence and adulthood when adult control is lacking and can also mean a financial advancement for disadvantaged youths and a haven for disturbed youths. CJS 240 week 8 day 4 Drug Use and Delinquency Response According to the article entitled, “Substance use among juvenile offenders”, it is suggested that juveniles are led to use drugs by watching their parental figures use in their homes (Stenmark, 1974). I agree with this assessment because children are taught the essentials at home by and through parental figures and if the parental figures are using drugs and alcohol then in turn it will increase the child’s risk of using as well. Drug use affects juveniles in many ways. According to author listless and their schoolwork gores downhill. The article goes on to state that juveniles who use alcohol or drugs tend to become dishonest, like adult alcoholics or addicts (Breu, 1989). Information gathered from both of the articles obtained seems to correlate to facts that I have been learning throughout life. Juveniles do learn various habits from home, such as etiquette, values and morals and some of those habits can also be bad habits. Bad habits learned at home can in turn be used to influence other peers that the juvenile chooses to hang out with. Drugs and alcohol also seem to contribute to failing in school as well as dropping out of school. Once a juvenile engages in using alcohol or drugs, their attention span becomes shorter and their desire to function in the classroom seems to dwindle.
