failure of the business operations of any company In the present era information technology systems are becoming complex so it requires a proper monitoring and control so that real business value can system can be costly for an organization which would be a barrier in its implementation because it ultimately increases organizations operational eXpenses Resistance When an organization adopts and installs a new information system it can become very difficult for the employee to work over it Employees must be willing to accept the change The issue of technology readiness is especially important for contact employees to whom customers may turn for assistance when problems arise Fitzsimmons amp Fitzsimmons 2008 p 100 How might these obstacles be overcome Obstacles may be overcome by training employees regarding the new information technology system This training will enhance their knowledge to work with the new system and their significant aspect Although costly for a firm management can control cost by cutting it in other operational expenses and in other departments It is essential for the management team to develop a set of migration strategies and technologies so that it would be easy for the organization to remove these obstructions and increase the speed of adoption and installation of a new information technology system Reference Fitzsimmons J A amp Fitzsimmons M J 2008 Service Management Operations Strategy Information Technology 6th ed New York NY McGrawHill We have seen many changes and innovations in the application of technology to operations management in recent years Using information from your readings identify the three most significant advancements in technology EXplain your choice of significant advancements Technology is continually evolving In order to advance we must also evolve and learn new skills to manage technology According to Collier and Evans 2007 Understanding technology in operations is critical for several reasons First virtually everything that is done in a business depends on some type of technology and neither managers nor employees can do their jobs successfully without it Second technology is evolving at an extremely rapid pace In your future career you will undoubtedly encounter more than one technology revolution that will drastically change how you work and require you to learn new skills p158 As the reading suggests steam engines automobiles and the radio where significant advancements in prior years however in my opinion personal computers the Internet and wireless communications are three of the most significant advancement in technology during recent years There is no doubt that personal computers changed the world The computer has enabled the world to explore more places create better inventions solve more mysteries and changed the world as we once knew it To me this invention has accelerated our learning well beyond what we could have done without it Like the computer the Internet changed the world as we knew it The Internet opened a door to the outside world of information and communication enabling access to information and Email has greatly increased efficiency and speed in operations Finally wireless communications such as the cellular phone wireless Internet and many other wireless devices have allowed just that wireless ability We are no long confined to the cord Devices can be used on the move enabling the user to continue to conduct business or research while on the go Reference Collier D A amp Evans J R 2007 Operations Management Goods Services and Value Chains 2nd ed Mason OH Thomson Financial justification of a new information technology system is difficult at best because many of the advantages are intangible Routine capital budgeting often overlooks siX areas of cost savings or revenue enhancement factors that are realized with new technology What are four of these factors Why are these factors important According to Russell and Taylor 2009 there are several factors that are often overlooked in the financial analysis of technology purchase cost operating costs annual savings revenue enhancements replacement analysis and risk and uncertainty Annual Savings Most new technology is justified based on direct labor savings However other savings can actually be more important For example a more efficient process may be able to use less material and require less machine time or fewer repairs so that downtime is reduced A process that produces a betterquality product can result in fewer inspections and less scrap and rework New processes especially those that are automated may significantly reduce safety costs in terms of compliance with required regulations as well as fines or compensation for safety violations p 239 In addition revenue enhancements may be realized Improvements in product quality price reductions due to decreased costs and more rapid or dependable delivery can increase market share and thus revenue Flexibility of equipment can also be important in adapting to the changing needs of the customer Russell amp Taylor 2009 p 239 These factors are important in the overall planning process for new technology Organizations need to be aware of the advantages that may be difficult to measure Failure to realize these benefits may cause an organization to opt out of adopting new technology Reference
