William C Jones V 9102015 Child Psychology Research Critique Grant The main purpose of the study was to test the effects of fetal exposure to glucocorticoids on children s susceptibility sensitivity to environmental stressors This study is important because this stress hormone was exposed in a prenatal environment and there wasn t evidence of consequences for cognitive functioning until 6 to 10 years after which is well into postnatal environment This means that steroids and other synthetic corticoids exposed to a fetus in the prenatal can very well show effects in test subjects later on The participantstest subjects were one hundred eleven mothers and their children from many different ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic classes These kids ranged in age from six to eleven years old Standardized measures such as Perceptual Reasoning Index and verbal list learning tests were some of the things used to measure parts of the children s verbal memory In the mothers intelligence and mood were measured with the second edition of the quotBeck Depression Inventory BDIquot and scores from the quotPerceptual Organization lndex POIquot
