Points to Consider When Choosing a Rug "One of the more common items used in decorating a home is the rug. This item is available in a huge assortment of sizes and shapes making it one of the more versatile accents. Rugs can be used to add warmth to a floor or to bring the other elements in the room together. There are some helpful points to consider when purchasing rugs for use inside the home. Size The size will be determined by two things; the room it will be used in and the space available to place it. While rugs can be the perfect addition to a family room or den, the choice of where to place them will affect the size used. Rugs placed under coffee tables or in front of a sofa or desk will be smaller than used to cover the majority of the floor. The carpets purchased for use in bathrooms will be smaller than those purchased for use in front of a fireplace. Fibers Where a carpet is going to be placed will also affect the amount of traffic it receives. Rugs placed in high traffic areas will stand up better if the fibers are made of synthetic materials. Fibers designed to perform better in high traffic areas are usually cut short and placed close together to make a denser surface area. Color and Design The best part about shopping for new rugs is the ability to select from hundreds of colors, patterns and designs. While rugs can be purchased as solid colored items, there are also many created with interesting, artistic and visually stimulating designs. These items range from those inspired by Asian designs to those from the Southwest. The wide range of patterns and designs are available in both traditional and contemporary styles to use in similarly themed rooms."
