Enjoying Scottish Tradition with the Highland Games Edinburgh The Highland Games originated in the 11th century. The Scottish event consists of a series of highly competitive games as well as other ancient traditions such as bagpipe playing and Highland dancing. The games are challenging, as there are many weight bearing activities involved. Both men and women spend time training for the various events so they have a chance to beat their brawny competitors. The Scottish tradition has spread throughout the world and many different countries hold their own Highland games event each year. Aside from the United Kingdom, the games take place in Australia, New Zealand, France, Norway, Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Canada, United States and the Netherlands. The largest Highland event in Scotland takes place in Dunoon each summer. The event draws around 20,000 spectators. The United States holds an even larger event in California that attracts an audience of over 50,000 people. The same ancient Scottish and Celtic traditions are always part of the games regardless of where they take place. Participants of the event wear traditional Scottish kilts while competing in strenuous games such as tug o' war, weight over a bar and haggis rolling. Some of the strongest men and women around the world compete in the games but anyone can have a chance to participate in exciting events such as the caber toss, thanks to the Mini Highland Games Edinburgh. The activity is perfect for hen or stag weekends. Participants can enjoy some friendly competition while tasting whisky and having a few laughs. Groups are divided into teams and plenty of instruction is offered so everyone understands how each different game is played. The mini version of the event is plenty of fun for people of all fitness levels who want to spend a few hours participating in traditional Highland games. The amusing prize ceremony makes the event even more entertaining. Groups who travel to Edinburgh for a fun weekend break can enjoy the Mini Highland Games on Saturday and then spend Sunday participating in an activity such as white water rafting or golfing before heading back home. People can find plenty of terrific Edinburgh hotels that can accommodate small, medium or large groups. Whether people are planning an exciting stag or hen weekend or an amazing birthday getaway, groups of friends or family members are sure to have fun at the Mini Highland Games Edinburgh. It is a great way for people to relax and have some fun while create lasting memories that will last a lifetime.
