COMM 3000Q-004
COMM 3000Q-004 COMM 3000Q-004 April 4th PS#2 is due Friday PS#3 will be posted at the end of this week Chapter 12: Two Group Difference Test—The Independent Sample T-Test - T-Test: An Overview • tests the hypothesis where we expect to find the difference between two groupings (categories) of the Independent Variable (IV) and the Dependent Variable (DV) - IV MUST be categorical and consist of only two levels (ie: male and female) - DV is continuous (interval or ratio level data) - we compare scores of the DV across both groups • Two forms of T-Test - Independent Sample: each group contains a different set of sampled units, which are selected independently • ie: online vs print news articles - Dependent Sample: selection of one set of samples is dependent on another set of sampled units • longitudinal • example: new anti-hunger weight loss pill. ratings of hunger taken before and after taking the pill - T-Test us a hypothesis/significance tests • statistic test “T” checks for and represents the difference between the means of two groups • remember: aim to reject the NULL • like any other statistic, it has a distribution too DOUBLE CHECK THAT USING THE CORRECT TABLE IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK - hypothesis testing • set the significance level (p=0.05) • state the hypothesis - direction or nondirectional - one tailed or two tailed determine degrees of freedom • • calculate the test statistic • find the critical value of the test statistic • make a decision about the hypothesis • More beneficial to have a directional hypothesis - ANOVA • analysis of the variance—examines variances difference between and within groups - often used to compare 3 or more groups or variables • usually try to stay within 3-4 at a time - Standard Error of the Difference: an estimate of the standard error of the sampling distribution of the difference between two means as estimated from the two samples approximately the average deviation among the results if the experiment were conducted • several time under the same conditions COMM 3000Q-004 April 4th COMM 3000Q-004 April 4th COMM 3000Q-004 April 4th
