Chp 22 and 23 Understanding evolution • All living things are made of DNA • Dna was discovered in the 1950 • Genes discovered 1960 • Genomes sequences 2000 These are all fairly new in discovery • Dna gives living things their Traits • Fur/hair color • Beak/shape • Wings,fins,legs or even no limbs Embryonic development • You are born with traits (inherited traits) • Some traits are acquired traits • DNA/traits are passed down from parents to offspring • Gentices-meiosis-inhertience • Mendel-Late 1800s Mutations in evolution • DNA/genes (instructions) can change mutations • Enzymes that copy DNA aren't perfect Normal DNA CTGGAG The fat cat sat. Mutations Bad or good? • Bad- Mess up genes, proteins- cell dies or on its way to cancer • Netural- Change has no effect • Good- gives rise to new alleles • When mutations happen in the offspring that’s when new evolutions happens because it has its first version of the new mutation. Mutations leads to genetic variation • In population that’s when evolution occurs it can't just happen in one person • Major/minor variation can occur in traits that ends up leading to new bone structure or fins or wings etc. • Variation is the first step in evolution V.I.S.T.A • Variation of traits/genes in a population • Inheritance of traits/genes • Selection environment selects which live and pass along their traits e m i•T • Adaptation • Over time the population adapt to the environment
