Saffron Walden is located in Essex between Cambridge and London. The area has been inhabited since before the Roman occupation of Britain. Evidence exists that Bronze and Iron Age tribes inhabited the area. Subsequent to the Norman invasion, a stone church was built along with a castle. saffron satiereal extract During the middle ages, the town was known as Chipping Walden and the primary trade was in wool and woolen goods During the 16th and 17th centuries the saffron crocus was widely grown and harvested in the area The extract from these flowers was used as medicines, condiments and a particularly yellow dye The agricultural growth and use of the saffron crocus let to the town's name being changed to Saffron Walden Saffron Walden is a historic beautiful town Due to the fact that it remains untouched by fire or war, many of the buildings, streets and municipal fixtures are centuries old These surviving buildings provide an unmatched character to the town and the valley that surrounds it Saffron Walden is home to the largest turf maze in Britain This saffron satiereal extract turf maze is approximately 100' in diameter and consists of circles cut into the turf and then the turf removed This turf maze dates back to 1699 and has had several renovations in the ensuing centuries In the 1840's Francis Gibson laid out and planted a hedge maze in Bridge End Gardens This maze is still in existence and provides moments of confusion to the unwary During the summer several concerts ranging from classics to rock to jazz are held in Saffron Walden These concerts are done in conjunction with BBC Proms Saffron Walden through its good fortune has maintained the character of a medieval town while offering its inhabitants all of the amenities of a modern lifestyle The ready access to both London and Cambridge provides ample opportunity for the town to be visited and residents to absorb the big city life that London provides saffron satiereal extract
