Relationship Beliefs Lecture 2 gt Self Perceptions Selfconcept all the beliefs and feelings we have about ourselves we try to ful ll two functions with selfconcept 1 Selfenhancement 2 Selfveri cation Important note We tend to seek partners who support our existing self concepts whether they are good or bad gt Impression Management 0 Trying to in uence the impressions that others have of us 0 We regulate nearly everything we do in front of others 0 It helps us accomplish interpersonal objectives those objectives could be getting a date in uencing our instructor getting something we wants from friends or family etc gt Strategies of Impression Management 1 Ingratiation seeking acceptance and liking from others 2 Self promotion wanting our abilities to be recognized and respected 3 Intimidation portraying ourselves as ruthless dangerous and menacing so others will do our bidding 4 Supplication portraying ourselves as inept in order to avoid obligations and elicit help from others gt Impression Management in Close Relationships 0 We tend to go to less trouble to maintain favorable images for our intimate partners than we do for other people 0 We try to create a desire public image of ourselves and our partners and the relationship in a whole 0 Self monitoring We watch what we say and do in front of others in order to showhide certain characteristics gt IMPORTANT Notes to Remember 1 We NEVER know our partners as much as we think we do 2 We tend to think our partners are like us more than they actually are this can be advantageous by creating a bubble of happiness but can also cIoud ourjudgment in the relationship
