Pura Vida, Costa Rica! Valentine's day time , 2010 It was about as romantic a day as you could ever anticipate. Yesterday was Valentine's Day, 2010 , and we are in Costa Rica. This really is the only place I have ever already been , other than my personal home in Ithaca, exactly where I feel true homesickness after i am not here. There is something special about the country which stays with you long after you depart , especially if you have experienced the richness that the place and the individuals have to offer. Perhaps there are a large number of other countries about that we could say the same basically knew them , but this is actually the place exactly where I have a expert and a social history going back nearly 25 years. I have reminiscences of friends and family and habitats and organisms here which run wide and heavy , and that is not easily duplicated in another place in a brief lifetime. On the water In the morning, robin the boy wonder and I met the guide from the southern area of Expeditions at Playa Pinuelas (pretend there is a squiggly highlight over the "n ", and articulate accordingly) near Uvita. All of us received the nautical directions , along with 4 other couples , and we boarded the smallish skiff for our tour of Ballena sea Park. We awoke the night time before almost regretting that i had decided to this journey. I am someone who suffer from motion sickness; i don't have a fairly history of being on motorboats in the sea. Twice we went fish fishing from the coast of Oregon in years past and I was the only one that got sick out of twenty passengers--both times. I must be in the tail of the statistical distribution with respect to this particular condition. It is simply no fun vomiting for 4 hours in front of ideal strangers, which is embarrassing. I wanted to see this park, i desired to do it, we dreaded doing the work , and I experienced like a coward all at the same time. It is like seeing a bare section of electrical cord top from a wall plug to your desk lamp. You just want to touch it to see if you get shocked. So when you feel which ZAP!, you have your answer and you are good to go for another 20 years. The skiff sped from the beach and that we headed for that open sea to look for whales and dolphins. I had attempted medications before , and they never helped, so i didn't actually bother this time. I couldn't remember what the sailors advise to avoid sea sickness---watch the horizon, don't watch the horizon, focus on something within the boat rather than on the water. I decided i'd keep my personal eyes shut as much as i possibly could. With sunglasses on, nobody would discover. Even my wife , who was holding my hand, must have assumed which she and i were enjoying the same view of the sea , and the sun , and the island destinations. Wrong! we wasn't seeing a thing. From past encounter , I would know soon enough if the was going to function , or basically was going to spoil the journey for that german couple who had been sitting downwind of me personally. Gott in Himmel, let this "eyes shut strategy" function. I don't believe within the American god , but i guess the german god really exists, because an hour passed on the vessel and I still felt good. I decided to spread out my eyes and look close to. Pretty nice. We saw no marine mammals, but all of us did some snorkeling, looked at some sea caves, as well as learned something about coastal topography. At the end , my wife was happy, i was happy, and the German couple sitting at the rear of me was happier than they could have possibly recognized. Romance at the Villa Leonor But the creme de la creme was later which evening at the Villa Leonor, where i had made reservations for a valentines dinner. The area is absolutely nothing fancy as well as , frankly, we wasn't expecting the night to flip my personal wig. The area is operate by high cliff , an ex-pat from co , and his tico wife anna. The idea was to come at 5pm for drinks on the beach, and to watch the sunset. Then , we would all retire towards the open-air restaurant of their own about 200 meters back from the seaside for reside music as well as dinner. We'd preordered the dinners the day before. The method was as romantic as you could create on paper for this day of days for sweethearts. But about an hour before we were to leave the home to go to the Villa, it started to rain , really, very hard. It rained so hard that the large tree fell down near our home , knocking out the electricity for the next twelve hours. However we had ordered our dinners already, and that we thought all of us owed it to high cliff to show upward for the meals he had probably gotten in specially for this night. All of us drove inside a pounding rain to the place. When we got to the parking area , Cliff greeted us with an umbrella as well as escorted us into the club area. He obviously had to cancel the beach soiree (pretend it comes with an accent aigu over the very first "e", as well as pronounce appropriately , but this really is French, not Spanish, such as the last term I supplied instructions for ). Cliff introduced us the complimentary drink , and we then realized which his electrical power was also off. REgarding ten couples are coming for a instead elegant dinner on a special day and the guy has no electrical power just as he's about to prepare a 3-course dinner. But high cliff is having a laugh and appears totally calm , and says something about creating do when in Costa Rica, and my wife is trying to create him really feel relaxed throughout a probable tense time like she usually does, which makes me really feel less relaxed because the woman's ruse is really obvious to me , because i've known the woman's for so long and i have seen the woman's do this a lot of times before. Basically, Cliff's message was , "we have no electricity, so let's party". Guests kept coming , and we all sat close to while it put like the demon only several feet away , and I could hear frogs calling in the rain under the eaves from the open structure with the thatched roof. Candle lights were lighted everywhere, also it was fantastic ! Cliff proceeded to go around to each guest as well as asked them how they wanted their meals cooked, no one complained regarding anything, and the orders were sent to the kitchen. Turns out these people cook with gas, therefore the kitchen was lit track of flashlights as well as candles and they proceeded. At about this stage , a young man from San Isidro picked up his acoustic guitar and started to sing. He continued for about two several hours with a fantastic collection of aged and new ballads, some in spanish and some in English. He was surprisingly good. The dinners came , the music ongoing , and about this time , the electrical power came back on. We realized which my very first impulse was one of frustration. We were eating my candlelight before the energy came back, not because all of us chose to make an effort to strike a romantic mood, however because we'd to eat my personal candlelight to determine our meals. To me, that actually was romantic. Cliff captured the change of mood instantly and turned off the incandescent lights which had just flickered on, and that we continued almost seamlessly. Success I don't consider myself a romantic , mushy kind of guy. My wife says she would like me personally to be, however I question that really. Last night's dinner was as romantic, within the fullest sense of the term , as it will get. My wife did look fantastic, however it was so much more than which. It was romantic because it might have turned totally sour when the attitudes within the room have been different, but they were not. The ambiance was perfect, but not so much from purposeful design , but because the guests and the restaurant staff went with the flow, improvised, laughed at the inconveniences, as well as were dissuaded from the indisputable fact that weather or power black outs would stop us from enjoying the moment. It was also romantic because robin the boy wonder and I fully recognized the knowledge as yet another memorable Costa Rican night that enfolded in a way less than expected. As well as OK, it was also romantic because all of us held hands for most from the night. Some mush is allowed. All photos were taken through DrTom.
