Local Jewelers Every mall, town, and city is home to a wide selection of local jewelers these days and choosing which one will best serve your needs may not be as easy as it seems. Several factors can hold influence on your choice of jewelers. • Selection. • Reputation. • Price point. • Customer service. • First we will deal with Selection. The selection varies from jeweler to jeweler. Some may carry generic jewelry, common designs you will see in most stores and are divided mostly by price, be it from tag price or how far they will discount. Most jewelers carry some designer jewelry brands and watch companies. Again this selection is decided by price point and target market. Before deciding on this factor you must have at least a rough idea on what you are looking for and what you are prepared to spend. To be brutally honest, there is no point shopping at a jewelry store that carries items that start in the thousands and run into the hundreds of thousands if you are only looking to spend a few hundred dollars, this of course also applies in reverse. If you are looking for a diamond encrusted Patek Phillipe, then some jewelers simply cannot help you. Reputation is your next consideration. Some jewelers are simply best avoided. A harsh truth, but truth none the less. Friends and relatives are a great source of information for advising for or against a local jeweler based on experience. On the other side of the fence, there are plenty of jewelers that take an amazing amount of pride in their reputation and will ensure that every customer is a happy one. Price point. Although we touched upon this matter earlier, there is more to this topic. Some jewelers have sales on a regular basis, others have a reputation for discounting on almost every transaction. A healthy amount of jewelers either carry brands that they cannot discount due to brand rules or simply refuse to discount as a store policy. Again, references from friends and relations are a good source for this information, as well as a little bit of shopping around in person. Customer service. Not only is this about how the staff treat customers, it can also relate to services offered. Some local jewelers may offer free batteries for life, or free jewelry cleaning. Some have on site repair services, some do not. Consider what kind of after sale support you may need and find out if the jeweler you are considering can provide it. Although large chain jewelers may seem like a safe option, never rule out the dedication of smaller jewelry companies. A lot of small family owned stores will give a more personal experience and will tend to appreciate your business a lot more than high volume chain stores. So research carefully.
