Understanding and Managing Problem Behavior Identifying Antecedents and Consequences Behavioral therapy is a form of therapy rooted in the principles of behaviorism. The school of thought known as behaviorism is focused on the idea that we learn from our environment. In behavioral therapy, the goal is to reinforce desirable behaviors and eliminate unwanted or maladaptive ones. The techniques used in this type of treatment are based on the theories of classical conditioning and operant conditioning. An antecedent is an event that occurs before a behavior and can affect the likelihood of the behavior occurring. Look at the scenarios below: 1. Joseph was playing with his blocks in his room. Dad told Joseph it was time to clean up the blocks for dinner. He threw his blocks across the room, screamed loudly, and threw himself on the floor. Dad walked out of the room. 2. It was almost time for Science. Ms. White asked Sarah to put away her markers. Sarah bit her own arm and cried. Ms. White didn't want Sarah to hurt herself, so she let Sarah take the markers with her. 3. Beth was riding in the car with her mom, listening to a Blue's Clues Songs CD. The Blue's Clues CD reached the end and stopped playing. Beth began crying and threw her cup. Mom restarted the CD. A consequence is an event that occurs after a behavior and can make a behavior more or less likely to occur. Look at the scenarios below.: 1. Brandon’s Dad was lying on the couch watching a movie while Brandon was playing with a puzzle. Brandon couldn't get the pieces to fit together. He threw the puzzle down and screamed. Brandon's dad put the pieces together for him so Brandon wouldn’t be upset 2. Anna was at recess at school. The teacher told her it was time to go inside soon. Anna said “no” and ran away. The teacher didn't want to chase Anna and decided they could stay a few more minutes. 3. Matt was playing with a toy. Another student try to grab it from him. Matt hit the other student. The other student let go of the toy and ran away crying. Learn more about behavior therapy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana by going to http://www.BatonRougeSpeechTherapy.com
