Many of these beauty specialists will focus on styling, coloring or cutting hair, while others will choose to specialize in such fields as nails or skincare. Every professional in this field will be required to complete a training program, in order to qualify for the cosmetology license. These programs can take nine to twelve months to complete, with some programs requiring a little as six months or as much as two years. Education Options and Program Overviews A beauty specialist is required to complete an accredited training program, in order to be eligible to take the state exam for the cosmetology license. Most schools and colleges will base their curriculum on licensing requirements that have been set by the state. Many programs will include coursework that will include safety and sanitation, business management, styling, cutting and hair coloring. Many of these programs will also provide basic training in skincare treatments, makeup application, pedicures and manicures. These programs can usually be completed in a thousand hours. A student is able to choose a specialty area of cosmetology, such as nail technology or esthetics. Individuals that choose to specialize in esthetics can take courses that will cover hair removal techniques, body hair removal, skincare chemicals, body wraps and facial treatments. Students that desire to work as a nail tech can participate in classwork that will include material on artificial nails, pedicures, manicures, nail diseases and nail color treatments. hair stylist Both specialists and cosmetologists will need to adhere to the licensing requirements that have been set by the state. Many states will also have age restrictions, in addition to minimum education requirements. In order to be eligible for the licensing exam, the applicant will need to have completed a certain amount of training hours during their enrollment in a cosmetology program. Licensing Exam Information The exam will usually consist of both a practical and written exam. The written portion will include questions about sanitation and safety, state rules and regulations, hair styling techniques, makeup application and chemical usage. The practical portion will involve the student following directions in order to style the hair on a model or mannequin. There are also some states that will administer oral exams, in which a student will need to give verbal answers to questions related to the field of cosmetology. The majority of states will have licenses for each cosmetology field. Some states can also combine specialties under one specific license. After the license has been obtained, the cosmetologist will need to renew it by paying an annual fee and filling out paperwork. The cosmetologist that has a license in the state they reside in will usually be required to apply for a new license, should they relocate to a different state. This can involve retaking the certification exam or paying a fee. Certificate and Degree Programs in Cosmetology Individuals that are interested in becoming professional cosmetologists can enroll in degree or certificate programs at a community college or beauty school. These colleges will offer the two year associate’s degree as well as certificate programs in cosmetology. A program will prepare a student for the state licensing exam and also provide them with the business and styling skills that are necessary in order to find employment in a beauty salon, resort, spa or other type of personal care business. In many instances, completing a training program is required, in order to obtain licensure. esthetician certification The certificate program will typically offer a student the opportunity to train in a local salon, or a salon that’s located on the school’s campus. The classes included will address facials, pedicures and manicures, scalp treatments, hairstyling, haircutting and coloring. Many of these programs will offer training in such specialty areas as hair coloring or hair extensions, which can also require additional certification exams. The associate’s degree program will offer additional topics such as business and management and marketing. This two year degree will also prepare the cosmetology student to run and operate their own business or find employment working as an instructor in a specific cosmetology field. Some programs will offer their students internship opportunities, which allows a student to work in a local salon. During the internship portion, a student can choose to work weekends or part-time in a spa or salon, or during the evenings, while attending school during the day. Working as an intern can help a student to establish themselves in this field by building professional experience. In most states, part of the licensure requirements will involve the cosmetologist obtaining continuing education hours, in order to be eligible for license renewal. Seminars and workshops are offered through cosmetology schools and community colleges and are designed to provide the hours needed in order to fulfill the continuing education requirements. Some of these sponsored seminars are designed specifically for specialty areas in this field.
