Asphalt Grand Rapids: The History and Uses As the title suggests in this article we are going to talk about the history of Asphalt and it’s connection to the city Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids is a small city in Michigan in United States of America, Almost with the population of 100,000 people. The asphalt’s first use was started in middle of 19th century. But it took a long time to become it popular almost about 50 years and after 50 years it was widely accepted and used in making of roads. But the uses of asphalt are not limited to just making roads there are too many uses of it. History: The history of asphalt is very long so we are not going to discuss it in this article, we are just going to give you brief introduction about it. Asphalt was first found with petro chemicals and was used in middle of the 18th century to get coal tar which is used in lamps. But in ancient Indian and Greek architecture there was use of Asphalt. So using asphalt is as old as man’s evolution. In city of Grand Rapids Asphalt was used before it was too much popular in US. Thus both the histories are connected to each other. Documents show that paving was started officiallyin Babylon in 625 B.C. But making road in those days was not easy, due to improved technology nowadays it is very easy to make a high quality road but it was not possible before. Uses: As you might think asphalt is not only used in making of roads but also it is used in making plastics and in making of petroleum as well. It was also used in making of water proof equipments and in water proofing of home and roads. Asphalt was also used as glue or also known as a sticking agent in several areas. In some countries asphalt was used to make stamps as well. Some individual results also show that 8/10 people nowadays use asphalt as their pavement option. Now 94% of roads in United States including all kind of private roads are made of asphalt pavement. So now you can judge yourself how good asphalt paved roads must be. Recently to improve asphalt paved roads some scientists added plastic to HMA also known as Hot mixed plastic , so it stability and durability became double. Thus the Asphalt Grand Rapids is the best road building agent and it has a long and rich history.
