Preregistration and Registration are not the same. Preregistration only serves as a notice to the Copyright Office of one’s intent to file a Registration application. Preregistration does not require the submission of one’s work as does a Registration application. Preregistration cannot be substituted for Registration. A Preregistration application is not appropriate in most instances. If a Preregistration application is filed, the filing of a Registration application is also required with the submission of one’s work once it is published. Proper filing of a Preregistration application will provide protection for your work. A Preregistration application is typically filed when one has started their work but has not finished it. A Preregistration application is typically filed when one suspects their work may be infringed upon before it is released. The cost of filing a Preregistration application through CopyrightPro is: (Government Fee) $140 + (CopyrightPro Fee) $100 = Total $240 (no submission of work is required) http://www.copyrightpro.net/faq-questions.php?cid=49 Finally, you are eligible to file a Preregistration application only if: Your work has not yet been published; Your work is in progress; You plan to distribute your work commercially; and Your work fits into one of the following categories: Literary, Visual Arts, Sound Recording, Performing Arts, Motion Picture/Audiovisual work or Single Serial Issue. http://www.copyrightpro.net/
