Personal Development: More on the Power of Presence with Kristi Hedges by Joyce and KenLatimer | on February 2, 2013 Source: http://socialmediabar.com/personal-development-and-branding-with-kristi-hedges Personal Development: More on the Power of Presence with Kristi Hedges In a previous post I talked about a keynote speech that Kristi Hedges, author of Power of Presence, gave at our statewide meeting. I had the opportunity the following day to participate in a more in depth workshop with her. And, she gave each of the participants a copy of her book. So I didn’t have to order it, I got one right away. But one of areas Kristi spent some time detailing in the workshop was personal branding. There were other areas covered that I will try to cover in later posts. But personal branding was especially pertinent to us as network marketers. Personal Development through Personal Branding Kristi Hedges spoke of personal branding in terms of personal values as opposed to marketing a brand directly. In other words, “how do you want your audience to feel about you?” What reaction do you want your audience to have to your presentation or conversation? Determine that and then determine the points that you need to make to accomplish that reaction as diagrammed in the Intentionality Frame. Your “audience” might be your colleagues, prospects, or friends. And, how you want to be perceived might differ somewhat with the audience. So based on an individually selected audience, Kristy had us do the exercise below. Work this exercise with me with your primary audience in mind: 1) Take a few minutes tolist the personal valuesthat make up your personal presence. They might be traits like confident, trustworthy, kind, generous, supportive, happy, persistent, knowledgeable, credible, fun, spontaneous, etc. 2) Then select the top 5 of those traits that represent how you want your audience to feel about you. 3) Create a “brand bite” from those 5 traits. This is just a phrase or short sentence that you can use to remind yourself of how you want to “show up” all the time. 4) Refine your brand bite over time. My brand bite – which is still under refinement – is “Lead and Lift by Example.” I’m happy with “lead and lift” but still working on “by example.” Again, the brand bite is your reminder of how you want people to FEEL about you when you interact with them. This is the phrase you say to yourself before an important presentation or meeting where you want to be perceived at your best. It directs your mindset to show your desired personal qualities. I want people to see me as a leader they can trustbut I also want to lift people up, inspire them to do more than they think they can. And although “by example” is an excellent way to lead and inspire, I want to lead and lift more actively than just by example. As I said, I am still in the refinement stage – but I would love to have input from those of you who know me!! Just add your comments below – or drop me an email if it’s too personal. We did share some of our brand bites within the group. One of the best came with a story. And, as we all know, stories help us remember the facts – and the feelings. This woman didn’t have to go through this exercise. She already had her brand bite (paraphrased): “As a college student I was a member of small group of friends that studied together. One semester the boys in the group decided to spend the semester building up us girls by providing anonymous notes of encouragement or gifts when we especially needed it, like right before big exams or big decisions. They kept it a secret all semester. And, they called that process “being a Barnabas.” So, my brand bite is: Be a Barnabas.” So what is a Barnabas? Barnabas International is a group that is all about encouragement, in particular encouragement for those involved in global ministries. So this woman’s brand bite is “Be a Barnabas.” Of course, we don’t know everything that phrase evokes for her. But we know that in this sense of personal presence her intent is to be perceived as encouraging to others. Develop Your Own Personal Brand Bite Spend some time working on your brand bite. Internet marketing, coaching and working with team members and prospects are all “people” businesses. Even when the prospect is on the other end of the phone or an email or your website, he is forming a mental image of you, developing a FEELING about you, which will impact whether he joins your team or buys your product. Be active in making that mental image accurate and positive. Your mindset is critical to promoting a positive image in the prospect’s mind. We all have skills and talents to share with others. The network marketing industry is one of the most nurturing industries for development and expansion of these skills. Take the time to go through the exercise above and develop a brand bite. Implement it by making it your mantra before any interaction with other people. Take your skills and values and keep them front and center in your subconscious brain to aid you in getting your intended reaction.
