buffalo and their fields The Widovving of North America 0 The sickness that the Europeans brought over to America with them the term for this was the widowed land Iohn Cabot 0 Worked for the British looked for a mining place and goes back to England and tells them of the surplus of cod as a food source 0 Cabot s voyage gave the British the claim to the land Reasons for British Settlement 0 European Rivalries they were worried about the Spanish 0 Mercantilism colonies all eXit for benefit of the home country raw materials got sent home 0 Population Pressures growing bigger so they sent the surplus to America 0 Religious Con icts were getting brutal and bloody Sir Walter Raleigh amp Lost Colony 0 Roanoke Island Sir Walter Raleigh convinced Queen Eliz to allow him to colonize the New World and they went and colonized at Roanoke o Roanoke was a horrible place for a colony and it did not last at all the colony disappeared 0 Raleigh returned and found nothing but a word carved in a tree The Virginia Company and Iamestown o The Virginia Company was in Jamestown o Iamestown was a better location and had great water access but it was also bad because there were so many mosquitoes and it was on a swamp 0 So many people died immediately 0 Iamestown was also right in the middle of Powhatan s Indian tribe 0 Powhatan was an aggressive chiefwho was at the time in the middle of uniting the tribes around the area 0 He let them stay though John Smith 0 The reason that Iamestown survived was because ofohn Smith 0 John Smith showed the colonists the value ofwork and that they needed to work in America and not just search for gold the whole time quotThe Starving Time 0 After John Smith died there was a period of starvation o The colony then developed tobacco and it saved them 0 Tobacco gave the people a crop to sell and in turn they made money Opechancanough and the 1622 Massacre o O was Powhatan s little brother 0 O started a massacre in the VA Company that almost wiped the entire colony out o The colonists answered by going to the Natives with a peace treaty and a white ag and took a celebratory toast but the colonists poisoned all of the Indians toasts Lord Calvert o The Calverts were a very prestigious family amp Lord Calvert was given rights to a colony in the New World 0 The colony was only going to be for Cathilocs but the he dies and his son takes over 0 Calvert eventually wrote the Maryland Toleration Act and this act made religious freedom The Pilgrims and London Company 0 There was religious con ict between the Puritans and the Catholics and so they ed to Holland but Holland was too liberal for them 0 The Puritans then boarded the May ower and sailed to America for religious freedom 0 This religious freedom only applied to themselves amp they did not tolerate other religions only their own 0 The church was the center of their lives they had the idea that they should be a shining example to the rest of the world May ower Compact 0 This was what the Pilgrims drew up as a government for themselves Massachusetts Bay Colony 0 Largely Puritan population and this is where the Pilgrims settled John Winthrop o Winthrop is the person who created the quotCity on a Hill 0 He was the one who said that the Puritans needed to be a beacon of light to the world around them 0 They had a covenant with God and believed in predestination o The goal of the Puritans was to be a quotvisible saint to the world Puritan society 0 Enforced conformity o Ran under a theocracy o This is when a government is ruled by the religious authority 0 There was an apparent hierarchy Roger Williams and Rhode Island 0 Williams challenged the Puritans and got kicked out the colony 0 He founded Rhode Island 0 Williams had founded the first place in modern history where citizenship and religion were separated a place where there was religious liberty and separation of church and state Anne Hutchinson 0 She challenged the church and she was put on a public trial 0 She was banned from society and so she moved to Rhode Island 0 She was accused of antinomianism o This was a person who maintains that Christians are freed from the moral law by virtue of grace as set forth in the gospel Uncas and the Pequot War 0 John Oldham was killed by the Pequots and Uncas who used to be a Pequot started another tribe started giving the Puritans info on the Pequots o The Puritans soon found the Pequots because of this information and they surrounded their campground and attacked the camp 0 It was a massacre 0 They then made the Treaty of Hartford and this stated that Pequot name shall never be mentioned again and the survivors would be sold and never mentioned again King Philip s War 0 This was the New England version of the Pequot War 0 It was famous for its brutality o The Indians wiped out 12 cities and killed over 5 of the New England white population and 40 of the Indians 0 It did end the threat in that area Plantation Agriculture 0 This kind of agriculture was different than what the colonists were used to in England 0 Wheat and corn became huge cash crops in New England 0 Tobacco was the huge crop in Virginia o COMPONENTS 0 You need a large amount of availiable land 0 Cash crop 0 And dependable supply of cheap labor o MUST HAVE ALL THREE OF THOSEquotquotquot The Carolina and Barbados 0 King Charles 2 rewards the Carolinas to people who supported him 0 It was initially one big colony and it was too big to govern 0 Split into two north and south o SOUTH o Charlestown was low and swampy and ran on the headrights system once you settle you get land it was all based on money 0 Lots of the South s profit came from Barbados I During this time South Carolina supported Barbados through the raisings of sugar amp food amp livestock 0 Barbados was a colony ofa colony and lots of indentured servants left Barbados and went to S Carolina 0 Barbados sent sugar to SC and SD sent them their stuff Stono Revolt o A guy in SC had 20 slaves and they killed their guards and tried to escape to Spanish FL 0 The mob grew to over 100 ppl and they killed a lot ofwhites until they got to Stono bridge 0 It took whites 3 years to kill all of them 0 Aftermath tighter slave codes 0 Slave Code of SC made the slaves tied to the land and made them property not people I SC was scared of slave religion and forbid all slave assemblies the owners were required to carry a firearm at all times and they made the amount of time for slaves to work is 15 hours Carolina s Siege Mentality Pieter Minuit and New Sweden 0 Minuit bought Manhattan for 24 dollars Formed the New Sweden Company to sell furs and tobacco in USA and under Minuit s command the company s first expedition set sail in 1637 to Manhattan Peter Stuyvesant and New Amsterdam 0 Dutch West India Company selected him to replace the old Direcotr of the New Netherland colony 0 Protective wall ofWall Street was built under his command William Penn and the Quakers 0 Penn was a war hero and his dad was very wealthy so the Crown really couldn t say much about their family since they had so much wealth 0 Penn cut a deal with the Crown and Britain gave him a colony Pennsylvania 0 Penn was very smart and created a doctrine for religious freedom 0 Pennsylvania and was one of the only colonies who negotiated with the natives and Penn never had a con ict with them 0 PA attracted much more than Quakers and also huge immigration from other nations 0 PA was the start of antislavery Anthony Benezet 0 Another leader of the Quakers and he came to Pa and started a school for blacks he became entwined with the black community starts abolition movement he points out that blacks are just as smart as whites others wanted to be like him such a good guy Iames Oglethorpe and GA 0 Oglethorpe was a military leader in SC and him and his people saw a need to get a border between SC and FL 0 GA experiment o A runaway slave group from FL terrorized Oglethorpe Francisco Menendez o Runaway slave who got a group together to terrorize Oglethorpe 0 FL gave him his own troop o Eventually circles the British and destroys a lot of them gets caught sold and he escapes and goes back to start it all over again 0 Because of all of that they started GA Nathaniel Bacon 0 Bacon was sent to VA because he was a troublemaker and Berkely was his uncle so he was supposed to take care of him 0 Found that VA was in more trouble than he thought and he arrives to native troubles 0 Bacon starts raising troops against natives and he slaughtered any natives he found 0 Bacon asks Berkely for rewards since he doing so great and Berkely gets him arrested this leads to Bacon s Rebellion 0 Bacon gets a troop of slaves together and other people who hate Berkely and they storm into Iamestown and Berkely ees they burn Iamestown but then he dies 0 Bacon s Rebllion was the move towards slavery in VA Sir William Berkely 0 He was a popular playwright who was a friend of the Royal Family and was appointed to VA governor but he was very POMPOUS 0 He ignored the people of his own colony because he wanted to keep them quotstupidquot and out of his business of trading trials begin and they start hanging people The Salem With Trials Ionathon Edwards and the New Lights 0 The Great Awakening started when the society was under great change Edwards was the leader 0 He saw religion as a personal experience 0 Him and his followers were known as the New Lights 0 Born again Christians Edmund Andros 0 Sent to America to start up the Dominion of New England which was the central control of all 13 colonies 0 He wanted to reinforce Anglican Church and that pissed people offbut he is recalled when James 2 goes down Salutary Neglect 0 British policy of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary laws which was meant to keep the colonists obedient to Britain Washington and Iumonville 0 They were both sent on the same mission both the English and the French wanted the Ohio land 0 Soon Washington s troops were captured by Iumonvilles older brother because Iumonville was killed by Washington s troops o The older brother forces Washington to confess to killing him and when Washington gets back to VA the leader of the English Braddock gets mad after hearing about all that had happened so he marches up to the French land and gets slaughtered o STARTS WORLD WAR The Braddock Expedition quot Mquot M quot The Iroquois Confederacy o Composed of 5 quotfamiliesquot and they each had their own dignified title of a nation 0 All around the Great Lakes and they held their own in the French and Indian War French Indian War 0 The French had better allies with the Indians and so they team up and start tearing up the frontier British begins to get beat up 0 The British back in England were mad because the colonists started the war but they didn t want to pay for it or fight it and they were also smuggling the entire time o The colonists were being treated as second class citizens and the British were arrogant and were brutal when it came to discipline and tactics o This was the first time that the colonists realized that they could do without the British and could break away 0 William Pitt saves the colonists in the war and gives them troops and money 0 British go up to the Great Lakes and the British capture the French and put them on ships and sent them away most went to New Orleans 0 Climax of the war was the Battle of Quebec and Wolfe Britsish marches his troops to Quebec city gates and Wolfe coaxes the French leader out to fight and then British demolish French troops Pontiac s Rebellion o Ottowa chiefjoined with Mohawks and a bunch of other Indian tribes to stand against the British for their land 0 This led to the Indians attempting to wipe out the English 0 When things were getting bad Amherst took blankets that had smallpox on them and gave them to the natives Peace of Paris and Proclamation of1763 o The Proclamation was a truce between the colonists and Indians to just stay out of each other s lands 0 This was the birth of the American identity 0 It closed off the frontier to colonial expansion 0 It also created four new colonies o It also said that all English people in the Indian territory had to leave and gave a list of prohibited activities 0 The Peace of Paris ended the French and Indian war
