In the following pages, we provide information on the the average lifecycle of various household appliances and a great rule from Consumer reports on when to buy and to when to replace. We hope you will find this information useful. I have a broken appliance should I repair it or buy a new model? Household appliances are meant to last for many years, which is a good thing, as the cost of purchasing a new appliance can be quite prohibitive. But it doesn't take long for a broken or malfunctioning appliance to become a huge hassle. Most Cincinnati residents do not 'plan' for their appliances to break down, and are forced to make quick decisions when an appliance goes out. So what information does a person need to help them decide whether they should fix their current appliance, or purchase a new one? When determining whether or not to replace your broken appliance Consumer Reports gives a great rule of thumb: if the cost of repairing your current appliance is more than half the price of buying a new one, you should replace your appliance. This is a great standard to help a person decide when to buy and when to repair. There is, however, another consideration that we at TriCity Appliance Repair recommend know the average lifespan of the appliance. By knowing the average life span of your appliance and using the above rule of thumb regarding the price of the repair, you will be able to make a sound decision as to whether you should repair or replace. The average lifespan of refrigerators Refrigerators are one of the longest lasting of all appliances. Properly maintaining and caring for you refrigerator can help to expand it's expected life cycle. According to the National Associations of Realtors refrigerators have an average lifespan of 14 to 17 years (freezers average 16 years). In our experience, a well maintained refrigerator can last as long as 20 years. The average lifespan of a dishwasher Many factors may effect the expected lifetime of a dishwasher (cost, quality, usage, maintenance etc). The expected lifespan of a dishwasher is between 7 and 12 years. A third consideration when determining whether to replace or repair is a dishwasher is that newer models of dishwashers may save you money through increased energy and water efficiency. The average lifespan of a washer and dryer There is a huge variance in the amount of years that a washer and dryer will function, which is largely dependent on the amount of usage. Some Cincinnati households do upwards of 12 or more loads of laundry in a week, while others do 2 or 3. Generally a washer and or dryer should last between 10 and 14 years. Both washers and dryers can be commonly repaired relatively inexpensively. The average lifespan of a garbage disposal On average a garbage disposal should last between 10 and 12 years. A malfunctioning garbage disposal is most often an affordable repair. Increase the life time of your garbage disposal by always being sure to run water when ever running the unit. The average lifespan of an oven / range A range / stove will on average keep cooking for between 13 and 15 years. Gas stoves generally live for 23 years longer than their electric counterparts. The average lifespan of a water heater When a water heater goes out, the decision to buy a new one or repair is usually made quite quickly. New water heaters can be very expensive so it is helpful to know that the average lifespan of a traditional electric or gas water heater is 10 years. There can be a huge variance in how long a water heater will function mostly related to water source, mineral levels etc. Now that we've detailed the average lifespan of major appliances in your Cincinnati home, we hope you will be able to make the best decision when determining when to buy and when to replace an appliance.
