Dubai Sustainable Architecture Sustainable Architecture & Urban Design in Dubai The city of Dubai has announced its ambition to become a “green paradise” by the time the World Expo opens its doors in 2020. The Expo will provide an international showcase for Dubai and there’s a real determination within the local construction industry that the city should lead the world in creating smart, sustainable developments. Two events taking place in 2015 will help refine the thoughts of planners, architects and environmental specialists as they work toward that goal. The Smart Landscapes Summit will take place in Dubai in April, while the Smart Skyscrapers Summit 2015 is scheduled for May. Both events aim to showcase innovations in smart building and landscaping technology. Smart Landscapes Summit Currently in its third year, the Smart Landscapes Summit promises to bring together over 400 senior landscape architects, urban planners, environmental experts, developers, contractors and government officials when it opens at the Sofitel Dubai on 28th April. The summit has been created to bring landscaping professionals together to network, learn and share ideas. A packed programme for 2015 includes topics such as “Food urbanism and edible landscapes” and “Landscape as a contribution to food and water security”. Delegates will also learn about an emerging technology that integrates vegetation with building facades as well as the use of drones in landscape architecture and environmental design. The Smart Skyscrapers Summit Dubai currently boasts the tallest skyline in the Middle East. Some of the city’s iconic projects include the Burj Khalifa (828m), the Princess Tower (at 414m the world’s tallest all- residential building), and the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai Hotel, the world’s tallest hotel (355m). While structural safety is paramount for these immense buildings, skyscrapers also need to be secure and energy efficient and to provide the best possible environment for residents and workers. Between 11th-12th May, 300 high-profile delegates are expected to attend the Smart Skyscrapers Summit, also at the Sofitel Dubai. This summit provides opportunities for architects and developers to discuss a range of topics, from innovations in smart paints and glass to the overall impact of skyscrapers on the urban context. Dubai Sustainable City project This growing interest in sustainable building solutions has focused attention on the Dubai Sustainable City project, which has just released its first batch of townhouses in the heart of Dubai. The project is being constructed over 46 hectares in four different phases, with completion scheduled for 2016. The city will offer 550 residential villas, organic farms, schools, colleges, a mosque, a planetarium and an ‘eco-resort’. 600,000 solar panels will provide residents with 60% of their energy requirements and the project’s smart water system will reduce buildings’ water demand by 30%. Wastewater will be processed to irrigate verdant areas, and the development will also create a state-of-the-art waste recycling system. With the World Expo just five years away, international developers are waiting with interest to see what Dubai can accomplish. The Sustainable City project demonstrates that the city intends to lead by example.
