Nancy Norton Kansas City, MO 64105 816.914.5033 email@example.com www.linkedin.com/in/nancyanorton Summary Law was “in the family” and law school an easy choice. And while the Socratic method of instruction may have inspired personal terror, the skills it taught were invaluable as they relate to critical thinking. Continuing in Communications, the information I learned early has been put to use across a broad spectrum of projects. My experience gives me an advantage in researching and analyzing a company’s comprehensive private and public priorities, and then accurately and appropriately conveying those priorities in internal and external strategic management communications. Communications then become an accurate reflection of your corporate culture, concerns, and goals, instead of template applications of industry messages or trends. Work History November 2010 – October 2012: Director of Publication Development; Access Advertising, LLC, 2001 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64108 I was responsible for the production of Horse & Academy Magazine, a popular national monthly online and print publication for girls. (Popularity did not bring with it reliable financial feasibility.) I managed H&A production from its beginning. I oversaw or directly performed management functions such as product branding, quality review, and strategic planning as well as technical skills such as writing, editing, proofing, layout and design. I was also a frequent content contributor and a daily monitor of our social media. In addition to managing our in-house and free-lance team, I followed up on consumer inquiries and worked to develop strategic corporate accounts. Before launching H&A I managed Access Advertising’s “think tank,” a group brought together to explore creative business strategies. Our areas of interest ranged from the development of digital “tabloid” versions of employee newsletters for the transportation industry, to U.S. – China business-to-business PPC marketing campaigns. February 2009 – November 2010: Attorney; Baker, Sterchi, Cowden & Rice, 2400 Pershing Road, Kansas City, MO 64108 This assignment involved trial preparation in pharmaceutical defense litigation. I was involved with subjective document review and analysis of massive current data and archived material to insure uniform document categorization, as well as compliance with Court mandates. May 2007 – October 2008: Communications Advisor; Hagen & Partners, 8010 State Line, Leawood, KS 66208 At Hagen and Partners, I researched and wrote in-depth, professional articles for a number of national publications (such as ABA Banking Journal, Western Banking, Stowers Innovations Inc./American Century Yes You Can, and Advantage.) I was also responsible for writing general communications, articles, editorials and newsletters for internal and external dissemination by upper management to industry employees, shareholders and clients. I was involved in the development and implementation of strategic executive level communications plans, as well as the development and execution of both short and long term client marketing campaigns. April 2006 – October 2006: Intern, American Art Collection; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, 4525 Oak Street, Kansas City, MO 64111 This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to work on a project that was the first of its kind in the country. Margaret Conrads, Curator of the American Art Collection, assembled a team to establish the provenance of each piece in that collection. I was fortunate to be involved in the final, exciting stage of research and editing the 840 page, 2-volume department catalogue prior to its publication. I was honored to get a small credit in the catalogue. th 1993 – 2003: Owner, Front Door Studio, 420 West 58 Street, Kansas City, MO 64113 I spent several years deep in the art world, financing, curating and organizing artists’ shows and openings. I was also a local representative for a nationally recognized fine art painter, Anne Burgess Rowe. Michael Walling of the Kansas City Art Institute invited me to attend panel discussions for students in KCAI’s Painting Department as a guest speaker. 1985—1992: Partner, Director and Officer; Withers, Brant, Howard and Mullennix, Two South Main, Liberty, MO 64068 I was fortunate to work at Clay County’s oldest firm, and to have its oldest attorney as my mentor. While there, I was in charge of developing and writing the first comprehensive employee handbook for one of the firm’s largest clients. I came to serve as the Acting Secretary of the Board and General Counsel of the North Kansas City Levee District, and frequently appeared before the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District. 1984-1985: Judicial Clerk to Presiding Judge Jack P. Pritchard, Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, 1300 Oak Street, Kansas City, MO 64106 Getting a judicial clerkship out of law school is considered a real honor; it has to be because the pay is so low. I had just moved to Kansas City when I started clerking at the Court of Appeals. During my appointment at the Court, Judge Pritchard was the Chief Presiding Judge, and sat on the Hyatt Skywalk appeals. This meant my work involved review and analysis of the files of that terrible event. Being new to Kansas City, my previous contact with that disaster had been limited. I will never forget it. Education Juris Doctor: University of Missouri, School of Law Columbia, MO Bachelor of Arts: Fairmont State University Fairmont, WV Summa cum Laude Phi Beta Kappa Society
