Lecture 12 Notes What is sleep governed by? brainstem nuclei Which receptors detect light? retinal ganglion cells What is melanopsin? photopigment that is depolarized by light in retinal ganglion cells What is the SCN? Master clock in the hypothalamus that controls the sleep wake cycle. If it is gone, then a person can’t have a sleep wake cycle. What is the period gene? 3 alleles of the same gene that control rhythms of sleep in drosophila What is REM sleep? It occurs 4 times in an 8hr sleep cycle. It’s a unique state of awareness, memory, dreaming happens, muscle are inactive Why are muscles inactive in REM sleep? GABAergic neurons in pontine reticular formation which causes relative physical paralysis What is the purpose of dreams? consolidate learned tasks by strengthening synaptic charges freud also said ego relaxes control on id What is insomnia? sleep disorder that is characterized by difficulty falling and/or staying asleep What is narcolepsy? people enter REM sleep during the day, and don’t have nonrem sleep during night
