English 1010 Lori Beste Ways of Reading, Chapter 1: Introduction to the Waysof Reading Making a Mark Page 2: make the text “silent” and start responding and expanding on what you were reading - Rodriguez talking about the “scholarship boy” from another book to describing himself. Normally you would expect the “scholarship boy” to be something positive, but then you think about the effort is actually put in to what it is to be one and you start losing a lot since you are more focused on achieving your goals more than your social life. Active Reading – pg3 reading, thinking, writing Pg5 we have to reread stories to see things that we missed “it’s not that we don’t ‘get’” we just see st nd things in a different perspective each time, 1 time is just to read 2 time you are actually engaging Ways of Reading Pg6 most textbooks just want you to take that point of view that you are given and to describe or paraphrase what you read. Pg6 reading for the main idea, not always a good idea since different concepts are different depending on the person and subject the person is reading Pg7 Get out the habit of looking for answers Engaged Readers, Engaged Text Pg9, why do we have to think of different ideas rather than just expanding and coming up with new evidence to what is already there? What if finding the main idea is in all essays and everything else is components to support to idea? - The importance of bringing Berger’s key terms “mystification” into that part of the book? Pg9 “the way we (as a whole) see things is affected by what we know and believe” - A beliefis a learned behavior so if we grew up in a society were killing was okay and being married to multiple people is acceptable, nothing would be wrong, but since we doing everything that we don’t see in our norm is considered different and weird. Same things go for reading. Pg9 Read as if it makes sense and perhaps it will” – I.A. Richards - The quote made sense in a way, but when you to question what if none of it makes sense, what if it wasn’t for a purpose or interest. That way making none of the information retainable, because you question what is actually there to remember. Reading with and Against the Grain Pg10 “reading is like a social interaction” – listening and responding Pg10 reading with grain – is to almost be like the writer and understand their point of view before going against/opposed. Fundamental Questions: - Where am I in this? - How can I make my mark - Whose interests are represented? - What can I learn by reading with or against the grain? Working with Difficulty Pg16 take notes on class discussion as a way to see what other people are thinking. Reading and Writing: The Question and Assignments Pg17 compare to your own experience Pg18 you do not have to have an answer for everything that you read Questions for Second Reading - Reread the text two or three times - Build connections nd - Take notes the 2 time Assignments for Writing Pg19 reconsidering the essay by going against or for, rereading may bring up parts that didn’t seem as st important the 1 time. - Ask questions about the wording in passages - Don’t expect to be told to go in a certain direction
