In business, blogs can serve to bolster a business’ interests and create more visits to its website. even if a website is goodlooking, it doesn’t mean it works well Early Website Technology In the 70s and 80s, only computer enthusiast and academicians used the Internet. *It wasn’t until Tim BernersLee invented Hypertext Markup Language in 1990 that allowed the World Wide Web to exist. *he invented Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) Websites could have used other languages beside HTML like Microsoft Word, but not all computers can read Word. HTML is used because it is standard and platform neutral. *he invented platform neutral language (layout format not really a language) started in 1969 at UCLA 19691990 no one knew about Websites are hosted on web servers. (doesn’t change is like a brochure) Dynamic websites generate a web page from a server. Facebook.com is considered a dynamic website. Facebook receives a request and generates a webpage on their server based on the user and then sends it to the client. *every time facebook loads (it’s called a dynamic site) *in cache (history) everything that comes to you on the internet, if you don’t clear it Web Categories •Personal •Governmental •Intranet Types of Websites •Search Engine •Content •Corporate •Commerce •Directory •Employment •Gaming •News •Personal •School •Video Sharing *Website Online Software (Important Slide/ Section) Relative to other computer programs, Hypertext Markup Language is NOT all that powerful. must have access for $500 (called a Fat Client takes up a ton of space) Fat Clients, for instance a robust networked database with rich functionality are typically distributed poorly. (Relative to distributing on the Internet.) Problems: takes up a lot of space & can’t use at home (distribution is terrible) Thin Clients are systems that use browsers as frontends with Hypertext Markup Language but are distributed throughout the Internet. (only do half of what the Fat Client will do) (Facebook.com is a thin client) Which is better, a Fat Client or a Thin Client? *Was AOL a thin client or fat client? It was a fat client, because you had to download it all. Online Advertising Search Engines offer its user results called SERPs (Search Engine Results Page). SERPs are listings of hits in response to a keyword query. Social Network Advertising can place ads for the demographic they feel best suited for their product and services. (Contextual Advertising) Banner Advertising is .JPG or .GIF image embedded into a web page that attracts traffic to the website of the advertiser. *•Cost Per Click (CPC) •Cost Per Thousand impressions (CPM) •Cost Per Actions (CPA)
