Date: 10/14/2013 IDs: Great White Fleet Meiji Restoration "Muckrakers" Eugene Debs Notes: John Hayes issued 2 open door notes which include the preservation of China's integrity and that all nations could trade with China. It was a declaration to other nations that the United States will trade with China. Through conflicts in both Cuba and the Philippines, United States had become a world power. In 1901, McKinley (president of U.S.) is assassinated. Teddy Roosevelt becomes president. Teddy Roosevelt had served in the Navy and was very much like Alfred Thayer Mahan. He believed in the idea of manifest destiny. Battleships construction increased during Teddy Roosevelt's presidency. Roosevelt sends a fleet of 16 battleships around the world. From 1907 to 1909, these battleships make 20 port calls. These battleships are known as Great White Fleet. The reasons that Teddy Roosevelt gave for sending these battleships was: 1) training purposes 2) intimidating Japan. The society of Japan, up to the 1860s, was very reserved and conservative. They were a feudal society. Urbanization didn't happen at a rapid pace. However, Japan believed that they were unique and exceptional people who were blessed by God. In 1868, Meiji Restoration happens. A new emperor takes over. This is a period from 1860s to WWI. Japan begins to have a more centralized government with a rapid process of industrialization. They started bringing in imports. By 1890, Japan has been industrialized. Because Japan feared being taken over by the west, they acquire a Navy. The society becomes centered around the military and navy. IN 1894, Russia, Germany, Britain and France are in China. That same year, Japan goes to war with China. It defeats China and becomes on the United States' radar of countries to watch out for. In 1904, Japan goes to war with Russia. At this point, Japan has gained control of Korea. Japan defeats Russia. In 1905, Teddy Roosevelt becomes concerned about Japan, and sends the Great White Fleet as a show of power to Japan. The Great White Fleet was sent to check on Japan in a discreet way. Domestically, the first years of the 20th century is known as the "progressive" era. "Muckrakers" was a term for investigative journalists who wanted to identify corruption in cities. Ida Tarbell was a muckraker who wrote an article about Standard Oil and exposed the corruption in Standard Oil Company. She shows that it's violating the AntiTrust Act. Muckrakers were also exposing over crowdedness, poor sanitation and overcrowded apartments. Many laborers were starting labor unions to get attention from the federal government. There are strikes in the late 19th and early 20th century. Eugene Debs is the leader of the American Socialist Party. He believed that workers were being exploited because of capitalism. He wanted capitalism to become a thing of the past. He runs for president 4 times. An ideal society for Debs would be one where there is equal distribution, equal property and no private ownership.
