Global Geography Notes McGowin Week 1- January ,14 2015 The Caribbean Physical Geography separates the Caribbean into two groups The Greater Antilles- large islands (examples – Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico). These are continental islands. Lesser Antilles- Smaller oceanic islands. Montserrat- Volcanic island where the capital has been covered by molten volcanic rock. The Bermuda Triangle- despite legends there have been no more disappearances here than anywhere else in the world. The Dominican Republic vs. Haiti- because Haiti is a considerably poorer country they have a greater level of deforestation. This increases the risk for land slides. This was demonstrated during the 2004 floods when the lack of trees caused widespread destruction in Haiti. Hurricanes- warm water causes hurricanes to form. In early summer we see hurricanes originate from the Caribbean. In late summer we see a shift in hurricane patterns, as they tend to originate from Africa.
