Ethics 01/13/2016 ▯ The Hastings Study: Goals in the study of Ethics  Stimulating the moral imagination: preventive ethics  Recognizing the ethical issues  Eliciting a sense of obligation: have the courage to live in truth and act in justice  Developing analytical skills  Tolerating disagreement: how many billion live on this planet?  4 Types  Truth vs. Loyalty  Individual vs. Community  Short term vs. Long Term o Corporations want to turn a profit right now but in many ways it is more important to do the Long term benefit, even if it causes problem short term  Justice vs. Mercy ▯ ▯ Right vs. Right: genuine dilemmas because each side is rooted in one of our core values  Right to honor a women’s rights and right to protect the rights of the unborn  Equal social services and right to pay attention to those who social backgrounds have deprived them of opportunities  Right to bench the start quarterback because of drinking and right to put together the best team for tomorrows game Values don’t always go together so that they don’t conflict with each other. Put in the position to decide which value is the most important to uphold in a given situation. Three general ways that we reason:  1. Ends based thinking: Utilitarianism o Greatest good for the greatest number o Promoting the thing that works the best, based on ends, what will my action produce  2. Rule based thinking: Categorical Imperatives o Act only on the maxim that you would will to become universal law o What if everybody did it: If you jumped off a cliff would you? o Shouldn’t be doing things that if everyone else did them would cause the world to fall apart o Librarian: what does the law say  3. Care based thinking: do unto others what you would have them to do you o How would you feel if the shoe was on the other foot o If it was you being told the white lie would you be okay with it, or would you want to be given the correct information ▯ ▯ Next Week:  Work through the first week of the course  Drop box assignment: Soficestry  First Initial, Last name: D. Solomon  Threaded discussion on the Librarian  Find an example of an ethical issue in the news o LexisNexis academic TCU Library site ▯ ▯
