Celts a) Nomads/Vikings from Gaul b) Migrated to northern British Isles c) One of many immigrants/tribe in Isles B. Julius Caesar Conquers 55 BCE 1. Romans conquered Britain by playing on tribal rilvarly 2. Tribes tended to wear blue war paint 3. Tribes were unorganized and charged at Romans who were prepared and educated in proper warfare C. Claudius Conquers 43 BCE 1. Makes permanent settlement in Britain 2. Inceni Revolt 60-61 CE a) Inceni was one of many British tribes b) In Roman revolt, teamed up with Queen Boudicca (Her and her daughters had been sexually assaulted by Romans) c) Famously Burnt down London d) Though a great revolt, they failed, and the queen committed suicide D. Fall of Roman Britain 675 BCE 1. Rules lasted approximately 500 years 2. Rome’s empire slowly crumbled over many years 3. Rome could no longer defend Britain 4. Tribes a) Many tribes had become accustom to Roman ways of life and relied on the empire to protect them while they lived in luxury b) The tribes became week, and unable to defend themselves 5. Tribes hired Anglo-Saxon mercenaries to stop invaders 6. The mercenaries then dominated Britain for 500 years
