Next Assignment due on the15th - what has been the position of the church in regards to organic evolution? o “The brethren argue sometimes. Some people would kill me for saying something like that but hopefully your testimonies can handle that. Oh, hopefully, that sounds awful! Yeah you guys are all gonna die tomorrow haha” o The Origin of Man (Improvement Era 1909)  This was the year that Darwin’s theories were finally accepted by society; natural selection was a hot topic at the time  “Man, by searching, cannot find out God. Lord must reveal Himself”  This article is very much against the idea of evolution  The statement was revised in 1925 to take out a lot of the negative connotations towards the idea of evolution o No Death on the Earth  Joseph Fielding Smith’s remarks on mortality and death prior to Adam; Roberts writes a letter demanding to know if this released statement is doctrine or his opinion and if it is just Smith’s opinion, then Roberts bring to question Smith’s education o There was a 3 day debate and the brethren were split, not knowing which side to take: science or literal scripture - First Presidency Statement on Pre-Adamites o Quote is on i-learn o Discount the statement of Elder Smith, clarifying that the denial of pre- Adamite existence is not doctrine, simply opinion o Emphasize that both perspectives and opinions are not doctrine o “Neither side of the controversy has been accepted as doctrine at all. Both parties make the scripture and the statements of men who have been prominent in the affairs of the Church the basis of their contention; neither has produced definite proof in support of his views” - Class Discussion: When would statements from apostles be considered doctrine? o General conference- the statements shared during conference are different from an apostle speaking anywhere else. What is said during Conference is prayerfully pondered an carefully addressed. o We can’t take the word of one apostle as doctrine. We need the second witness, a third witness…. o Books written by apostles and prophets are not doctrine o How do you know whether something is doctrine or not?  The feelings that arise from it  Pray about it  When you hear something and the Spirit witnesses it to you, that’s doctrine. If you hear something and you get uncomfortable and the Spirit isn’t with you, that’s a witness too  We need to keep in mind what is pertinent to our salvation and what isn’t. what will help us get to where we want to be
