Purpose of the writer: To introduce the readers to basics techniques about academic writing.  That way they can become better writers.  To listen to others carefully including those who disagree with your point of view to see beyond your beliefs. The important template focus in this book is the " They say I say template. The They say I say template is used to help not only help you present your ideas but to be able to present those ideas as a response to some other person's( Paragraph 6 Pg.3) The authors advices his readers to include the voices of others inn your text ( Paragraph 6 Pg.3) One feature of good academic writing is to engaged with other people's point of view ( Paragraph 7 Pg.3). To be impactful writer you must find a way of entering a conversation with other's view with something they said ( Paragraph 8 Pg.4) The "They Say I say model is used to agree and disagree with others, even to agree and disagree at the same time( Paragraph 15 Pg.8) The "They Say I Say model is used to stir up controversy ( Paragraph 15 Pg.8) When agreeing and disagreeing simultaneously presents a more complicated argument ( Paragraph 18 Pg.9). The "They Say I Say Model helps writers make challenging moves (Paragraph 20 Pg.9) First the template helps you open your texts by identifying an issue in a conversation or debate.  To map the controversy voices.  The template helps introduce a quotation  To state your argument  To qualify your argument  To support your argument with evidence  To summarize and then answer a likely objection to your own central claim  Lastly to help you shift between general claims( Paragraph 21 Pg.10) The template in this book will help your writing become more creative The template do not dictate your writing but simply suggest on a way of formatting how to say it. The give you tools to use to get started These templates will not only help you become a better writer but to aid you in becoming more of critical and intellectual thinker Hence helping you participate in debates and conversation. Part two:  Summarizing others argument is crucial to your argument.  Writers who make strong claims need to map their claims relative to those of other people.  Good summary requires you to balance the authors point and your point.  A lot of writers do not summarize because they do not want to take the time to understand what the author is saying  Or because they fear it takes away from their view. On The One Hand Put Yourself In Their Shoes  To write a good summary you need to be able to understand the opposing argument.  When a writer fails to provide enough summary they engage in what is known " the closet cliché syndrome.  The Closet Cliché Syndrome: What gets summarized is not the view the author in question has actually expressed but a familiar cliché that the writer mistakes for the author's view.  Hint, when summarizing the authors view make sure to summarize properly and not get confused with your view. Know Where You are Going  A good summary also requires you to summarize what the author is saying but to fit your point of view.  Do not over summarize the authors argument  To avoid over summarizing make sure that your "They say I say matched.  List Summaries: Summaries that simply inventory the original author's various points but fail to focus those points around any larger overall claim. Summarizing Satirically When a writer gives the summary his or her own spin to someone else's argument in order to reveal a glaring shortcoming in it.  Satiric mode can be effective form of critique because it lets the summarized argument condemned itself.
