Richard Martin 10/28/15 National Endowment for the Arts Praises the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities for its Arts Integrated Curriculum The National Endowment for the Arts supports arts of all kinds across the nation. One city in particular is Greenville, South Carolina, home to the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. Greenville is home to the Peace Center, a well-known showcase for musicians, plays and other arts. Many Governor students have performed here as well. The Governor’s School was built for the purpose of nurturing student’s arts areas while balancing their academic career. The school normally focuses on academics in the morning and arts in the afternoon, giving equal time of the day to both areas. The instructors also help prepare the students for a professional career in the arts area if they so choose. For some after graduation enter straight into a conservatory or a dance company. The th th Governor’s School is for 11 and 12 graders but offers two week summer camps to 9 and 10 graders to help them decide if they want to attend their junior and senior years. I had the opportunity and was accepted into their summer camp my rising 10 grade year. I went as a percussion student and had a small taste of an arts school. I lived on the campus and attended various music classes such as music composition, music history and music appreciation. There were no academic classes offered since there wasn’t enough time to earn any credit for the classes. The experience was an amazing experience and I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the school. I choose not to attend and choose the more traditional high school life. I continued to play percussion but I was able to be in the high school marching band, something I enjoyed. We were able to go to competitions, play on Friday nights at football games as well as perform for the school. I was also able to be in the beginning years of our schools Indoor Drum line which was another amazing experience. The National Endowment of the Arts helps promote the Governor’s School which allows students to pursue their art careers like myself and determine if that is what they want their career to be.
