Daniel Carder     JEN Conference    Greetings! My name is Daniel Carder and I had the awesome opportunity to go to the  JENerations Jazz Festival, January 711, 2015, San Diego, CA. with the BGSU Vocal Jazz  Ensemble. It was a week filled with learning and bonding with my peers. When we arrived in  San Diego, we were allowed to view many other great vocal jazz groups from around the  country. We saw the world famous, “Thelonias Monk Jazz School’s” Vocal Jazz ensemble which was a great treat. They had some of the best vocal and instrumental jazz musicians from  around the world in their ensemble and we could tell that they were the real deal. We saw a lot  of groups throughout the week, but I don’t think anything topped being able to perform on the  newcomers stage at JEN. We were able to sing an entire set for anyone who wanted to hear us. We had a master class the day before out performance, with some of the board members from  JEN, who were also Jazz instructors at other universities. They gave us valuable feedback  and  helped us to make our songs even better. One of our “mentors” for the master class gave  helped us to tell a story by changing the way we said certain words and where we put emphasis on others. Our sound also become a lot better as the conference went on, because we took  everything that they told us and improved our set. We were also able to sing along side Peter  Eldridge of  “The New York Voices”, which was amazing. We sang a piece that he arranged  called “Mother and Child Reunion” and he played the piano with us during our set. We were also able to Earth, Wind and Fire’s “September”, arranged by Kerri Marsh and he was there as well  and afterwards told us that we did his arrangement proud. That was a very special moment for  all of us. And throughout the entire experience, the vocal jazz ensemble grew closer. We did  just about everything together. We walked together, and ate food together, and saw different  performance together. We did life together and it brought us closer, which also helped us to sing a more heartfelt set. But none this would have been possible without Pro Musica. This JEN  Conference performance and experience was funded in part by a Pro Musica Small Grant  awarded by Pro Musica, alumni and friends in support of the College of Musical Arts at Bowling  Green State University and I am so very grateful, blessed, and honored that I was able to  attend. Thank you very much.  Yours Truly,  Daniel Carder
