Psych 360 Chapter One The power of the situation  Other people (how you act around particular people)  Group membership (conformity)  Roles (boss vs employee, instructor vs student)  Time of day (circadian rhythm, age/time of day)  And many other situations! Science of Human Nature  Discovering what it is we all have in common Social Psychology: the scientific study of… How situation influences thoughts, feelings, and behavior. How other people (in particular) influence thoughts, feelings, and behavior. How our thoughts about, feelings towards, and behavior towards others. Social behavior is multiply determined by personality & situation.  Meaning more than one thing (Multiple Determinism) Personality: Internal & Situation: External  Which has a stronger effect? o Some people have a stronger personality, and some situations are stronger than they are. However, there is no clear answer!  When we try to make sense of others’ behavior, which do we think has a strong effect? o We can pick what is most convenient for the situation (EX: not wanting to believe a friend is annoying [personality] and instead thinking they’re just having a bad day [situation])
