Psych 360 Chapter One The power of the situation Other people (how you act around particular people) Group membership (conformity) Roles (boss vs employee, instructor vs student) Time of day (circadian rhythm, age/time of day) And many other situations! Science of Human Nature Discovering what it is we all have in common Social Psychology: the scientific study of… How situation influences thoughts, feelings, and behavior. How other people (in particular) influence thoughts, feelings, and behavior. How our thoughts about, feelings towards, and behavior towards others. Social behavior is multiply determined by personality & situation. Meaning more than one thing (Multiple Determinism) Personality: Internal & Situation: External Which has a stronger effect? o Some people have a stronger personality, and some situations are stronger than they are. However, there is no clear answer! When we try to make sense of others’ behavior, which do we think has a strong effect? o We can pick what is most convenient for the situation (EX: not wanting to believe a friend is annoying [personality] and instead thinking they’re just having a bad day [situation])
