Chemistry Chapter 1 ATOMS 01/15/2016 ▯ Matter is composed of particles o -Ex atoms molecules and subatomic particles such as neurons protons and electrons ▯ How the particles come together dictates the physical property Elements Molecules and Mixtures : The Types of Matter o Atoms- basic submicroscopic particles that are the building blocks of ordinary matter o Molecules- substances formed when two or more atoms come together (bond) in specific geometric arrangements o Atoms and molecules determine how matter behaves The Classification of Matter o Matter can be classified according to : o Its state; physical form or o Its composition; the types of particles o The state of matter changes from solid to liquid to gas with increasing temperature o Solid Matter- Atoms or molecules pack closely together o Liquid Matter-Atoms or molecules pack closely but are free to move relative to each other o Gaseous Matter- Atoms or molecules have a lot of space in between them Classification of Matter by Components o Matter can be classified according to its composition: elements, compounds, and mixtures o First division in the classification of matter is between a pure substance and a mixture o A pure substance is made up of only one component, and its composition is invariant o A mixture ,by contrast, is a substance composed of two or more components that can vary from one sample to another Classification of Pure Substances o Categorized into elements and compounds o This categorization depends on whether or not they can be broken down Classification of Mixtures o Heterogeneous and Homogenous Mixtures o This categorization depends on how uniformly the substances mix within them o Heterogeneous is made of multiple substances who’s presence can be seen The Scientific Approach to Knowledge o Based on observation and experimentation o The scientific method is a process for understanding nature by observing nature and its behavior through experimentation o Key characteristics -observations -formulation of hypothesis -experimentation -formulation of laws and theories Obsevations o Also known as data Hypothesis o A tentative interpretation of explanation of the observations A Scientific Law o A brief statement that summarizes past observations and predicts future ones o Allows you to predict future observations -so you can test the law with experiments o Unlike state laws scientific laws cannot be violated by choice Theory o a well established hypothesis forms the basis for a scientific theory o a theory tries to explain not merely what nature does but why a natural phenomenon happens ▯ ▯
