ELizabeth Horton  ENGL 203  Try This 6  November 5, 2015  Saying Goodbye  (Eric stands in the doorway, looking around at all the empty boxes that will soon be filled with his late parents' belongings.)  SHANNON  Eric, honey. We need to get started if we want to have this stuff packed in time to get the kids from school.  ERIC (Rubbing HIS face). Yeah, you're right. Hand me that box, would you?  SHANNON  Sure. Is there anything else you need? (Handing HIM the box and putting HER hand on his shoulder.)  ERIC No, thank you though. You start on one end and I'll start on the other.  That way we can meet in the middle and hopefully have this room done in time  to get the kids. My sister is going to come out tomorrow and go through to get the things she wants, my brother should be here this week too.  SHANNON  We don't have to do this today. We can come back tomorrow and when your  brother comes. That way you guys can do this together. It's not that I don't  want to do it. I just think this is something you should do with them, not  with me.  2 ERIC No. I don't want to do it with them, I don't want to do it at all. My  parents are dead! I don't want to go through their things, claiming them as my own, dividing them among my siblings and I. It's not fair! They'll never get  to see their grandkids grow up, they'll never see them get married. It's just  not fair!!!  SHANNON  Honey, I know that (ERIC starts sobbing.) ERIC You don't though! You don't understand Shannon. You will NEVER  understand. My parents are dead, now I have to go through all of their things  and decide what I want for myself. This is something that my sister used to  joke about, we never thought it would happen. At least not this soon! They  were supposed to live so much longer. They've endured so much and they die  from a car accident?  SHANNON  You're right, I don't really understand. All that I can do is try to be  here for you, but I can't do that if you don't tell me what you need. I want  to help you Eric, I really do, but we need to start packing up this stuff. We  have to pick the kids up from school and then we can come back but we need to  get started. Either we do it now or you can do it without me tomorrow when  your sister is here. (ERIC wipes his face on his sleeve)  ERIC Fine. Let's get started then.  3 SHANNON  Okay. I'll start over here then.  (SHANNON walks to the other side of the room)  SHANNON  Did you guys ever talk about who was going to get what when your parents passed? I mean, it isn't something commonly talked about but...I know that my  cousins and I used to tell our grandma which of her rings we wanted when she  died.  ERIC Actually, no. Jessica used to joke about putting postits on the things  we wanted when they died but we never did it. She had seen it on the show  Gilmore Girls or something and thought it would be a good idea. I guess we'll  just box it all up and take it to storage and then, maybe, in a few months we  can really go through it. Ya know? Once we've had time to kinda process it  all.  (There are a few moments of silence except the occasional sound of something moving  into a box. ERIC closes several boxes.) SHANNON  I guess that makes sense. (SHE seals the box she had been packing). But  why waste the time packing it now to just go through all of it again?  ERIC 4 My brother wants to get the house on the market as soon as we can. It's  a big house, good neighborhood, great school district. He thinks that it'll  sell relatively fast.  SHANNON  Oh. Well, then why don't we just move in here and sell our house?
