Thursday January 21, 2016 Public Speaking Chapter 16 17 18  Methods of delivery o Memorized  Don’t try to memorize the entire speech o Impromptu  On the spot speech  Might happen during business meetings o Manuscript  Ex: Franklin D. Roosevelt: Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation  Reading from paper  Run the risk of sounding robotic  Best to use if you know you’ll be emotional when reading o Extemporaneous  3 Defining Characteristics:  Well prepared in advance  Delivered from brief notes  Exact wording chosen in the moment (Conversational quality)  Nonverbal Delivery o Eye Contact  Very important  Associated with credibility  If you avoid eye contact, audience won’t find your work credible o Movement/ Gestures  Balance – Be natural!  Be mindful of what you are doing o Posture  Adapt to environment o Facial Expression  Make sure you don’t make the wrong expression during the speech o Personal appearance  Very important  Must dress up  Speech and environment will decide what outfit you should wear  Vocal Delivery o Articulation & Pronunciation  No slang Pg 155  Sound formal  Ex:  see you instead of see ya  Morning instead of morning  Gunna do instead of going to do o Volume  Know your volume, if you need to be louder or softer  Know the environment you are giving your speech, if that will affect your volume  Balance  Projection o Pitch  Speaking with influence vs. Being monotone  Normal changes in pitch o Rate  Balance  110 to 130 wpm = too slow  140 to 175 wpm = excellent  180 to 220 wpm = to fast o Silence & Vocalized Pauses  Using silent pauses  VPs= um, er uh, alright, I mean, you know…  Instead use silent pauses  Rehearsal o Preparation IS Key!  Draft 2 days earlier at minimum  Rehearse your speech to see where you will need speaking notes  Stay within time limits- revise if necessary  Use system that works best for you as your prepping your notes. Symbols, full sentences, key words  Pg 162: assessment  Record yourself and watch it to find what you need to improve
