January 13, 2016 International Politics ● Politicsow values are divided out in a socho gets what, why, where, when and how. ● Nation: Settlement of huma that come from same ancestors, live in a certain area and have similar cultural characteristics ○ Have memory of shared past and plan toward a future ○ The concept of a nation was first introduced in the book of Genesis ● State:theadministrative institutf a nation ○ State is in charge of politics ● Society: activities that a group(the whole nation, a whole population, a community) ○ State is also in charge society (ex: state controlling what is taught in school) ● Totalitarian Stastate that is extreme exercises control over society in ALL aspects ○ Ex: Nazi Germany ○ They usuallbegin with a distorted idea that is followed and exaggerated ○ Writer from Russia says that worse part of communism was control over Russian writing and language by the government, could only write about communism ● Democracy: majority rule but minority have rights ○ Democracy is the right not to listen ○ Totalitarian states forces information to be known ● Huge idea is that fact one nation can have many states ○ Ex: Germans in Austria, Germany and Switzerland (this led Hitler to try and unite all germans through harsh foreign policy) ● Americans usuallyunderestimate century old conflith the idea that the private sector can resolve them ● International Relations begun as part of law school but overtime separated with University of Chicago being the first school to have a separate IR school ○ Other famous school ohn Hopkins University (SAIS) founded by Paul Nitze ○ ost recent addition hitehead School ● In foreign poliNationalism causes nations to fight among each other ● What is aSuperpower? ○ It isstate that is involved in many aspects of in many places ○ Similar to an investor in the stock market that has lots of shares in different companies thushas to keep his eyes on the way the market isto ensure that he is doing good ○ The USA has lots of treaties with many countries and is involved in a large array of worldwide events ■ Ex: NATO, NAFTA, EU relations, Middle East involvement, etc ○ A Superpower has HUGE influence over what will happen in the world ● Rational Actor: ○ Questioninghow rational a nation’s actions truly are ○ Many actions are based on selfish reasons, and can lead to worldwide crisis ● Interdependence: no matter how good the relationship is between two nations, all nations have a degree of interdependence ○ Ex: 1994 Ethnic conflict in Rwanda between hutu vs tutsi with hutu killing MANY tutsi; bodies moved up Nile so water became undrinkable affecting many countries along the river.
