Interpersonal Communication Introduction January 21, 2016 Elements of Interpersonal Comm: 1. Messages and Meanings In order to communicate there must be a  message sent from a sender to a receiver.  Each message has a  meaning that the sender wants to get across to the receiver. 2. Interaction Between People Interactions can start within a “dyad”,  which is a group of two people.  In order to develop a conversation,  the dyad must interact with each other, thus creating communication  whether it is formal or informal. 3. Mutual Influence People within the dyad are interdependent of each  other.  Therefore, influence is argued to be the most important part of  communication because the dyad feeds off of one another in order to  maintain and establish an interaction. 4. Ongoing Relationships most studies look at the relationship’s past  experience and relational context in order to observe it  interpersonally.  This can be in a romantic relationship, friendship,  family, or peers. 5. Rewards and Costs Looks at what is given and received out of a  relationship.  How does someone benefit from it and what do they  lose out of having this relationship. 6. Expectations and Rules these serve as the benchmark for deciding  how satisfying the relationship is.  What does the person want from  the relationship and what would and wouldn’t they allow. 7. Schemas an organized knowledge structure that fits how something is supposed to be.  For instance, having an ideal in your head how a  classroom is supposed to be set up.  This sets the level of what is  supposed to be so that you later expect it to be that way; it forms our  expectations
