Filial Obligation 1/20/16 10:48 AM What makes filial obligation an important problem to consider when it comes to love? 1 The family structure has changed over times and now a wide range of families exist o Maybe the way we think about families have changed what we think our obligations are 2 People are becoming older o Elder care is now becoming more common 2 The necessary care to treat an elder care is extremely expensive o Emotional burden as well 2 Birth rates are going down, less children to provide care than there were in pervious generations Big 2 points:  Parents have less children but the labor for end of life care is going up  Shifting family structures have changes what roles each family member should take on Why are filial obligations problematic?  Do they exist at all? o Why are we assuming obligations 1 You owe obligations to people who's relationship is non-voluntary a Parents choose to make you and raise you, you didn't have a say until after the fact ; One side of the relationship got to determine the sides of the contract 2 Even when it is voluntary, it's still asymmetrical until you are 110% independent a Pay for college, have collaterol over you 2 If we owe for vital needs, we have a requirement to repay them for their vital needs 3 Theoretical: Certain individuals that have children get treated in a special way when it comes to obligations a Ex: A lot of TV shows and marketing is based on families , tax breaks based on size of family, by persuing adoption you can get a tax break b Parent - Child relationship is a "gift" ; the legacy itself is a gift 2 Practical: How to distribute obligations between both parents equally a Do you have more obligations to one parent vs. another Debt Theory  Definition: one owes repayment to one's parent for whatever investment of resources the parent has made on one's behalf, regardless of the parents need or the child's ability, the debt must be repaid, unless the parent releases the child from their debt o Ex: I owe repayment to my mom for whatever investment my mom has made on her behalf, regardless of her needs or my abilities, the debt that I occurred has to be repaid unless my mom releases me from the debt  Children have specific obligations to their parents: They must pay their parent's "investment"  Creditor-debtor relationship ; all terms and contracts Friendship Theory  Children ought to do for their parents what they would do for their friends  Obligations depend upon the need and abilities of both child and parent, as well as current state of relationship  What matters most is love and friendship  Should not think of it as a debt or a favor  Just like we may suspect a friend who does nice things to get some sort of repayment, we too suspect the parent who invests in their child for personal gain. Gratitude for Special Goods Theory  Definition: One's filial obligation is to provide the special good that the parent needs. This obligation is necessary to fulfill so long as the following conditions are satisfied:  End of life care to parent, because parent's need needs to be taken care of. To fulfill this obligation, this needs to be in place 1 Parent needs good a Ex: End of life care 2 Child can position themselves to provide this good a Ex: Has a career in end of life care / has financial needs and emotional capacity to take care of parent  Parent has provided / still providing special goods to child o Ex: Parent took care of child are one point  Expressing gratitude by providing the special good for the parent needs would not undermine the mutual respect on which moral relationships are based. o Ex: Moral respect  It is necessary that both parties respect one another in order for this relationship to be maintained.  Parents cannot expect repayment for their services without qualifications
