January 14, 2016 PBS: Why Poverty? ● Think of 3 questions: 1. Is poverty inherent trait of society or caused by countries history? 2. What are the causes of poverty? How do the causes vary from region to region? 3. What is the best way to reduce poverty? ● Problem with hunter and society is that itno way to adapt to change ● Later in histormost people were poor ○ 35 year lifetime, famine seems natural and unable to escape ● Poverty is what makes rich people rich ○ Engine of system, this makes it seem natural and unescapable ● Middle Ages: poverty is fact of lcharity is done to help your sins ● Paris around 1300 is mostly poor ○ New religious order leading to monks going out to beg taking money from poor ● Latin America:colonialism taking all gold from natives ○ Disease was brought, land was taken and natives were enslaved ○ This was the fastest retreat into poverty ○ Left foundation of future poverty ○ Same pattern seen in Africa with Portuguese ● Europe was poor before colonialism with all other nations being richer ○ Became rich by taking wealth from colonies ● In East (China)Confucian beliefs thought that poverty was bad showing inaccurate government administration ○ China was usually wealthier than Europe ● Poverty has 2 phases: 1. Everyone living in own farm 2. You are in ciiving next to rich adorking a lot ● First years of Industrial Revolution there was no improvement in povertn reality the Industrial Revolution decreased poverty quickly and greatly ● New insecurity where jobs are temporary and can be lost past ○ Great result was “workhouse” or “poorhouse”thought they would have men to work, in realiusually helping women, elder and young so not as much work being done ■ Poor would find way to cheat the system ● Karl Marx believed thapoverty is result of capitalist syin Brazil peasants go up into mountain following Antonio ○ Revolution is only solution to this poverty ● Mid19th century is rise of incomeven in lower class ○ Not one formula exist to decrease poverty ○ Rest of world still trying to catch up ● End of 19th century,industrialized countries moving out of poverty and rest of world is under their control ○ Africa suffers due to slave trade ○ Indian famine caused because food was shipped instead of given out ○ Colonial police even made local currency unvaluable leading rich losing their wealth because not worth anything ● 1930 land act in South Africa made it hard for blacks to have la while giving it all to the whites ○ Blacks forced to work for free ● After UN, nationalism rising in Africa and Asind of colonialism ● Most important way to get out of poverty igive them a way to get out of poverty ○ Brazil tries to solve this through education ○ In China, the people have had to move out of community and work in awful conditions ● Answer to 3 questions: 1. Natural to have little inequality et worse depending on system a. Not about poverty but inequality in system 2. Colonialism in Africa and Latin America a. Laid foundation of poverty throughextraction, conflict and instability b. Hard to sustain wealth in such instability c. Division by colonists with no nationalism 3. No one solution or formula a.
