Neuroscience is an umbrella term for science of the nervous system, lots of branches Biopsyc is the branch of the sub group that focuses on neruo processes… of behavior -Provides us tools to study behavior We need a nervous system to create behavior…movement, human beings are not stationary Brain and Mind Two views: Dualism: the brain is a physical entity, and is constrained by laws that govern the universe, the mind is not material, and thus is not subject to physical laws of the universe >mind and brain are two fundamentally different things Monism: mind is a quality of the brain, but not separate from it Descartes said that the mind and brain were two different things, but said that there was no way to measure cognitive activity -“Reflective” behaviors are wired into the behavior of humans -these reflexive behaviors were controlled by the brain -he was influenced by the works of the renaissance, particularly hydraulics -you don’t have to attribute behavior to the mind, the brain just did it -we need to use the mind as the term “soul” to study rational behaviors Involuntary actions = mind Voluntary actions = brain Ventricles: hallow spots in the brain He found the pineal gland…the “interface” between brain and mind -interesting to him because it was one of the few/only singular part of the brain (not bilateral not on both sides of hemisphere) Prosopagnosia – ability to recognize a face, ex of a general class of problems that are called “agnosia” from Greek word gnisos, “knowledge”, the prefix “a” means lack of, so agnosia means “lack of knowledge Problems for mind-brain dualism -there doesn’t appear to be any psychological processes that are immune to the effects of brain damage >the mind is not material, it works as a whole (dualism), it suggests that brain damage may result in a lower functioning -split brain – split mind? >developed in the 1960’s to contract epilepsy disorder >seizures were spreading to both sides of the hemisphere >Sperry studied effect of the corpus callosum (fiber bundle that connects the two hemispheres, major pathway) to try and control the epilepsy in animals -splitting the two hemispheres to stop the spread of the epilepsy Two independent minds? >split brain operations results in two separate functioning brains -the issue of animal consciousness
