WGST 1101 – January 13, 2016 Lecture right to vote – protestors led by Alice Paul (arrested for protesting “disturbing the peace,” held a hunger strike while imprisoned, mistreated in prison) civil rights – intersects w/ gender rights  colors are not inherently gendered; pink was originally considered a boy’s color  our society emphasizes masculinity but doesn’t provide security for boys in their masculinity so they constantly have to prove it through violence  parenthood often doesn’t focus on a father’s role  women in America aren’t taken seriously and are objectified, especially women in power in the “study of women”  women have generally been “looked at,” not asked  women were/are generally “studies” as a separate section or subsection of work  academia presented truth/history/science of humanity without women’s perspective, leaving half of the population with no input or representation, telling half of the story/truth in the “study of women,” women are objects in “women’s studies,” women are subjects fortune 500 companies receive the most government welfare sex – identification of humans based upon chromosomal patterns, hormonal makeup, ad genital structure
