HY 121/Week 2 Jan 21/Thursday Continue of Tuesday notes: Settlements of English colonies of the new world st Virginia is the 1 colony that set up as a Joint Stock Company The way slaves and indentured servants were treated was up to the masters Maryland was set as a Haven for Catholics then became a Haven for all practicing Christians Importation of Africans into Virginia, Maryland st 1 documented importation of Africans was in 1619 o Not referred as slaves, they are servants at this time What happens during the 40 year period that changes the status of Africans from servants to slaves? Between 1619 and forty years after that African slaves become essential to the Virginia and Maryland economy growing tobacco o The more the economy is going to depend on large scale control labor the more the Virginia and Maryland colonies king and queen of England is going to want to control and regulate labor o Benefits England, and benefit the slave owner Why the influx of white indentured servants shut does downs and is replaced by African slaves? The economy of England improves England and other countries decides that the importation of Africans would be an endless supply from Africa and the importation of African slaves could last forever What was life like in the Chesapeake colony and Virginia, Maryland Colony? It was tough for everyone It was a gender imbalance (males to females) o Male Africans to female Africans o More males than females slaves The salves population increases very slowly as long they were two females and too many males o The affect is that England is going to keep importing slaves As the population of Africans rises because of importation, the Africans outnumbers whites o The law responds by imposing harsher laws o The more they import, the more Africans come in, the harsher the laws get The freedom of slaves is restricted New England (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine) What makes Boston, Massachusetts a revolutionary place? New England is very different from the other colonies The people that comes from England into New England is the Puritans Puritans Strict, uptight in their religion Most religious Called the Puritans because of making the church pure Didn’t think the church of England was strict enough o They believed that the Church of England was too catholic Puritans are Protestants who believed that the only established protestant church in the world wasn’t enough They were so obnoxious in their religion that they were prosecuted in New England Decided to leave England and create their own version of Christian paradise Nobody likes the Puritans, hard to get along with because their too strict The Puritans are not as righteous as the separatists The Puritans believes in the teachings of John Calvin o John Calvin is the 2 most famous protestant besides Martin Luther o John Calvin is very strict, worse than Martin Luther o He believed that God is omnipotent (all powerful) Puritans believed that if God is all powerful, humans are weak o Believed if humans are weak, it is easy to fall into temptation Catholics believed in good works (equal access in going to heaven) Puritans believed in pre-destination (who’s going to heaven and who’s not) Separatists Also hard to get along with Separate from the puritans and create their own Comes over the Mayflower Compact (an agreement) o They made an agreement of self-government o Famous because it’s one of the 1 documents of a group of people deciding to governed themselves Both the puritans and separatists are on a mission from God Massachusetts Bay Settled in 1620 Settled as a super religious theocracy Settlers were 50% Christian and 50% capitalist o Capitalist Christians Elected John Winthrop o Model of Christian charity Christian covenant was one of the primary things the Puritans believed in 1643 city of Boston was the biggest cities of colonies with 20,000 people Puritans and separatists that are going to focus on “a city upon a hill” o City upon a hill means paradise o Exceptionalism (one of a kind) The most tolerate of all the colonies is Rhode Island Rhode Island distinguish itself as an outlier Anne Hutchinson-symbolize what happens when someone gets out of control o She is the ultimate bad girl o Very religious woman o Became a criminal because she decided to teach bible study in her home o Illegal to spread the word of God besides the clergy and she was a woman o She is put on trial and is convicted During Anne Hutchinson time, Christians believed women couldn’t go to heaven
