SOC 1010  Week 2  Chapter 1: The Sociological Perspective  Sociology ­ systematic study of human study and social interaction  Sociological imagination ­ i​s the ability to see the relationship between individual experiences  and the larger society.  ­ personal trouble: ​private problems that affect individuals and the networks of people with  which they regularly associate  ­ social context: problems that affect large numbers of people and often require solutions  at the societal level  The environment influences how we think  62 people own as much wealth as half the world’s population  How do you feel about this? Is this fair?    Sociology affects different countries with differing income rates differently  In the age of Industrialization, urbanization occurred bringing along changes to sociology  August Comte (1798 ­ 1857)  ­ coined the word sociology    Positivism → belief that the world can best be understood through scientific inquiry    Important People to Know:  Emile Durkheim (1858 ­ 1917)  ­ people are products of their social environment  Karl Marx (1818 ­ 1883)  Max Weber (1864 ­ 1920)    Bruce Springsteen   ­ artist  ­ his music enunciates different types of oppressions  Other songs also speak of oppression  ­ beyonce ​ If I were a Boy  ­ Grace ft. G Eazy ​You Don’t Own Me  ­ Originally sang by Lesley Gore in 1963  There are Four Main Theories in Sociology  1.  Functionalist Perspective: ​ are based on the assumption that society is a stable, orderly  system.  2. Conflict perspectives:​  belief that groups in society are engaged in a continuous power  struggle for control of scarce resources.  3. Feminist Approach: stresses the importance of gender as an element of social structure  a. Patriarchy​  is a system in which men dominate women.  4. Symbolic interactionist perspectives:​  argue that society is the sum of the interactions of  individuals and groups.  a. Macro­level analysis: examines large­scale social structures  b. Micro­level analysis: focuses on small groups  1
