INTRO TO HUMAN COMMUNICATION January 25, 2016 Public Speaking Anxiety & Public Speaking  Communication anxiety, especially when speaking in public, is perfectly normal  The key is not to eliminate anxiety but to manage it Managing Anxiety  Preparation and practice are the keys to managing anxiety related to public speakers  Practice out loud, standing up, and in an environment similar to the one in which you will be speaking  Preparation and practice will give you confidence, which helps you manage anxiety Confidence & Skill Set  Your skill set includes the practical tips to reach public speaking goals: o Visualization  Visualize yourself delivering your speech effectively o Study other public speakers  Effective speakers approach public speaking as a conversation with their audience  Effective public speakers focus on the informational needs of the audience Gain Experience INTRO TO HUMAN COMMUNICATION  Perhaps the most effective strategy to improving both your confidence and public speaking skills is gaining experience o Speak in public whenever you have the opportunity o Even an experience of only a few minutes will help to diminish your anxiety Attention to Details  There are FIVE areas to consider when preparing a speech o Consider your audience o Select a topic o Gather supporting materials o Organize materials o Practice the speech Considering the Audience  A savvy speaker will strive to know as much as possible about his or her audience  Consider your audience’s attitudes o Toward you as a speaker o Toward the topic you select o Toward the speaking situation  Know why the audience is gathered  Help the audience have a positive attitude toward your speech o Consider situational factors  Analyzing your audience helps you gather valuable insight and minimize unwanted surprises Selecting a Topic and Purpose  Select a topic that interests you o Increase comfort level o Add to credibility as speaker  Establish your purpose o To inform o To persuade INTRO TO HUMAN COMMUNICATION o To entertain Gathering materials  Start by jotting down a few main ideas you would like to cover  Further develop using information you gather from other sources Organizing Supporting Materials  Organize materials in an easy-to-follow, logical sequence  Use traditional statements to connect the various parts of your speech Practice, Practice, Practice  Practice your speech o Out loud, several times, and in front of friends and family o Video record yourself if possible  Practice all elements of speech o Eye contact, posture, breathing, rate, volume, gestures, and enthusiasm
