TRAD 104 Spring 2006 Discussion Section Justice amp Virtue TA Will Braynen March 3 2006 WWWuarizonaeduwaraynentradl04 Hobbes s Leviathan chapter 17 of bees and ants pp 416417 It is true that certain living creatures as bees and ants live sociably one with another which are therefore by Aristotle numbered amongst political creatures and yet have no other direction than their particular judgments and appetites nor speech whereby one of them can signify to another what he thinks expedient for the common benefit and therefore some man may perhaps desire to lcnow why mankind cannot do the same To whichl answer First that men are continually in competition for honour and dignity which these creatures are not39 and consequently amongst men there ariseth on that ground envy and hatred and finally war39 but amongst these not so Secondly that amongst these creatures the common good differeth not from Q private and being by nature inclined to their private they procure thereby the common benefit But man whose joy consisteth in comparing himself with other men can elis nothing but what is leminenti Thirdly that these creatures having not as man the use of reason do not see nor comment 02 think they see any fault in the administration of their common business whereas amongst men there are very many that think themselves wiser and abler to govern the public better than the rest39 and these strive to reform and innovate one this way another that way39 and thereby bring it into distraction and civil war Fourthly that these creatures though they have some use of voice in making known to one another their desires and other affections yet they an that art of words b which Comment 03 some men can represent to others that which is good in the likeness of evil39 and evil in the likeness of good39 and augment or diminish the apparent greatness of good and evil39 discontenting men and troubling their peace at their pleasure Fifthly irrational creatures cannot distinguish between inz39ur and Eamage39 and therefore as long as they lbe at easd they are not offended with their fellows whereas man is then most troublesome when he is most at ease for then it is that he loves to shevv his wisdom and control the actions of them that govern the commonwealth Lastly the agreement of these creatures is Luml39 that of men is by lgovenan only which is artificial and therefore it is no wonder if there be somewhat else required besides covenant to make their agreement constant and lasting39 which is a common power to keep them in awel and to direct their actions to the common bene t THE OVERLY ANALYTICAL HOBBS The art of editing we call it proofreading There are at least 53 errors How many can you find Hobbs woke up scared that morning along with every one else in Oxford He was scared because the chicken was guarding it s chicks this wasnt a good sign But it was better then nothing Afterall the chick was full ling it s duty Like all phylosophers Hobbs was overly analytical and couldnt help but analyze every thing to death I am probably over analyzing this thought Hobbs Well better this then to be committing some gross unjustice he sayed to him self If I am truely devoted to phylosophy than I will hone my skils any time any where using any opportunity what so ever that s true devotion he reasonned Was Hobbs deseaving him self Was he simply lieing to him self lfhe was than it was due to the fact that he had low self esteem he hadnt gone out on a date in a long time and it was really having an affect on him But is dating good for it s own sake he thought lts probably only valued by British society so we dont all die out What are the principals of dating Again he was overanalyzing Not five minutes would go by with out Hobbes overly analytical phylosophical mind getting the best of him People want to fullfill there desires but his was turning into an obsession Thats the price one pays for the persuit of truth Maybe better be a sophist Wham your judgement Comment o4 Comment o5 Comment o6 Comment o7 Comment o8 Comment o9
