Chapter 2 Terms and Information  “The Nature of Science”  What Is Science? o A means of interrogating the natural world to discover truth. o A way of thinking  o A systematic process an intellectual toolset.   Critical Thinking o Deliberate process of judging the quality of information before deciding whether  or not to accept it.   Misconceptions about Science  o Science is a collection of facts.   (Truth): Science is a process o Science does not involve creativity  (Truth): Creativity= Innovation= Discovery  o Science is too self­assured .  (Truth): nothing is every beyond questioning.   The Scientific Method o Observe/ Question a phenomenon   Ask why does this occur? o Develop a hypothesis/predictions.   A scientific testable explanation regarding some phenomenon. o Devise a test of hypothesis/predictions.   Establish variables, and groups.  o Carry out test to collect data.   Controlled experiment o Analyze and report results.  Review and report your findings so others can learn.   Life Application: Childbed Fever o Many women were dying either during child birth or directly after and doctors  were unsuccessful at changing this factor for a decent amount of time. However,  it took many experiments to finally discover that hands needed to be washed and  sterilized.  Natural (Scientific) Laws o Unchanging o Physical/Mathematical o Nonexplanatory
