Notes from the week of 1252016 She posted an image of Osama Bin Laden talking to a national news station having western items such as an expensive watch and an AK 47 There are two ironies of this photo 1 although he is staunchly about his government and culture he is using western items 2 The interview was taken when he was in hiding yet it was a global broadcast This example was to explain that globalization cultures impacting other cultures is unavoidable but there are people who still say globalization doesn39t exist or if it does it is not a new idea The nonbelievers have many reasons as to why it doesn39t exist like that many countries are still isolated and the nationstates and corporations are still the ones with the most control Overall it s a 5050 debate but Dr Sanders said that she just wanted us to grasp both sides of each argument Crisis to capitalism Capitalism is losing its legitimacy because it is not working in millennials favor anymore We aren39t able to get jobs or keep homes because we make too little and we make too little because companies have to reduce pro ts in order to give their employees bene ts Also there is the spatial x of the race to the bottom going overseas to exploit workers We then discussed Walmart and if it the company has a universal good quality Some said yes because they give people jobs and bene ts Some said no because they dismantle the strength of communities and small business The CocaCola company are prime movers of globalization as part of the idea of this iconic commercial httpswwwvoutubecomwatchvcsEXmU14N28 Glocalization The ability to think globally and act locally For example McDonalds in other countries use foods that will appeal to the areas In Chile they put guacamole on their burgers In India they don t use beef at all because the country believes the cow is sacred Question to think about What is the thing that moves through space and place What is the it that is spreading Commoditization Giving something economic value Anything Example A hotel in Jamaica has the slogan Welcome to Jamaica where there is seven days of sunshine or your money back Appropriation The stealing and rebranding of a cultural custom item etc Please Watch Life or Debt
