History (1.27.16) Reading on Thomas Paine Thomas Paine was born in England, and lived most of his life in England. Moved to America in 1774. Failed marriages and jobs in England. He sells everything he owned and sailed to America. He moved to America to become prosperous. Writes common sense and it became a best seller. People debated it and it was one of the reasons for independence. He was considered a “ founding father” He was poor and other founding fathers were rich. John Adams did not like Thomas Paine. A lot of the founding fathers did not like him as much as well. After the war Thomas Paine becomes more and more radical. Member of the French National Assembly. Was not recognized by his death only six people at his funeral) America will not lose ties with Spain or France because trade connects them together. 1754 Assembly of colonies brought together by Benjamin Franklin Albany plan: bring delegates from each colony together to solve the issues that were going on. Based on the Iroquois nation, native tribe that bring together all the native tribes to solve their issues as a nation. Everyone rejected because they did not want to be involved. Why do they change after three decades? First factor: the colonies are very diverse, and none of the colonies don’t have the same interest. Second factor: the fact that the British government does not have much to do with America. A hands off approach because it was formed by private companies. Third factor: a system of commerce that is in place links Britain and America together. The system is called mercantilism: this means every commodity had to go through England to go anywhere else. This was not in merchant’s best interest. Lead to development to some important cities. The biggest cities were seaports. 7 Years War Conflict between England and Spain, then England and France. War breaks out in North America. English and French claimed that Ohio was their land. More outsider’s come and help fight with their allies all over the world. The fighting does not go well with the Brits at first but they win because they have a lot of money to spend. They end up going into debt and have a treaty called Peace of Paris (1763). French gave all claims to their land. More oversight on the land that they won over from France. So it was regulated by the British crown. The debt gets worse because they have to maintenance the land that was acquired. The British was taxed very high, and this made them mad so they asked why they should pay if the war was fought in America. King George III, was a young king when he ruled, he did not let an official his job, so he made the plans. He is the reason that things went sour. He appointed ministers that no one liked. The government before the war in America was a salutary neglect. King George III opposed this. The first tax that happened was the Sugar Act (1764)( a tax on sugar, gave military courts authority to try to convict you of a crime). Smuggling in America was bad but the gov’t did not care until King George III switch up the punishment. People did not like it and started talking about it. King George III retaliated by enforcing the Stamp Act (1765) ( taxed everyone that used paper) The colonists did not have a voice on what was going on in Parliament, so they suggested that they be represented if they are going to be taxed. Parliament told them that they will be represented just like British who cannot vote. They rally together to get representatives to go over to Britain. Boston became a place where violent protesting happened. Parliament decides it wasn’t a good idea that and repeal it. King George III enacts another law that they will have military watch the colonies 1770 March 5, British army fire on unarmed protestors, five people died. This is known as the Boston Massacre. The massacre is used as propaganda to separate from Britain.
