Alicia Fursich (SLIDE 1) The Profession of Audiology CDS 290 LECTURE 2 (SLIDE 2) eardrum: sealed membrane, nothing can go in unless hole in eardrum -middle ear space: ossicles carries vibrations into inner ear -hearing and balance in ear -cause of dizziness is damage of organ in inner ear -damage of inner ear: deaf (SLIDE 3) inner ear is inside of brain: you can’t see it (SLIDE 4) hearing damage can be the ear or the brain -intraoperative monitoring to prevent damage during surgery (SLIDE 5) ENTs and audiologists are partners -optometrist: eye exam, ophthalmologist: eye surgery (SLIDE 6) ear infection is most common problem in children, can affect learning, speech development (SLIDE 7) lose communication- brain can dysfunction (dementia) (SLIDE 8) (SLIDE 9) used to be mostly in hospitals (SLIDE 10) (SLIDE 11) (SLIDE 12) if they can’t hear speech sound they can’t produce speech sound (newborns) -drugs can be very toxic to the ears, can cause permanent hearing loss (antibiotics) (SLIDE 13) air conduction: produce sound through ear phone, soft sound at top loud sound at bottom, on left can only hear sound at line (40) – produce sound through bone oscillator they can hear (deficit from ear to skull- conductive hearing loss, common for children) damage middle ear -right sound= normal hearing low pitch but poor hearing high pitch, damage to inner ear -when losing hearing for aging, lose part of hearing first (miss part of word not whole word, they can hear you talk but don’t know what you’re talking about) (SLIDE 14) (SLIDE 15) after evaluation come back 3 months later for another evaluation to see if there is still a problem with hearing loss or if it was fluid in ear, etc. -CAPD is not because of ears (SLIDE 16) for babies, make a noise and if brain reacts you will see response on screen (SLIDE 17) if noise is too loud it can damage cells, if the cells are damaged they will never come back (SLIDE 18) open fit hearing (SLIDE 19) (SLIDE 20) (SLIDE 21) (SLIDE 22) (SLIDE 23) (SLIDE 24) (SLIDE 25) (SLIDE 26) (SLIDE 27) (SLIDE 28) (SLIDE 29) (summary)
